Another Hole Filled

And other miscellaneous finds this weekend I finally got to go through the Eisenhower Dollars in the hoard of coins passed on to me from my mother. I do believe she was looking out for me this weekend. While there were not a great many Ikes, less than 20, in the bottom of the box were three nice ?Blue Ikes? still on their original packaging. Along with the ?71, ?72, and ?73 ?Blue Ikes? was a ?71 ?Brown Ike? as well. Those were nice but the real find from my perspective was in the loose Ikes. H

All That Glitters is Not Gold

Or even Silver for that matter I am not nor have I ever been a commodities trader. However, I have always had a love of numbers and modeling various systems in an attempt to gain insight into the possible future behavior of those systems. The comments posted by Augustus prompted me to see if I could modify one of those models to analyze the current situation with the prices for precious metals in particular silver. I agree with Augustus! Silver is due for a correction and I believe his estim

US MINT Press Release 15 Jan 2010

First 2010 coins released I just checked the US Mint web sight and was pleasantly surprised that the US Mint will be releasing the first of the 2010 coins. The 2010 Native American Dollar will be available in $25 rolls beginning at noon on January 22. They will be the usual Special Mint Wrapped rolls from Philadelphia and Denver. This year they will be selling at 32.95 per roll just like the Presidential Dollars. You can order 10 $25 dollar general circulation rolls from the mint right now

My Wife Says I Have Holes In My Head

But it?s really just holes in the coin album. I have learned something very important about myself already this year. Empty holes in my coin album drive me CRAZY! The vast majority of my collection is housed in albums, a vestige of my youth and subsequent lack of resources when the coin collecting bug first bit me. I started with folders as most kids do and gradually moved to albums and just recently to slabbed and graded coins. I still have a folder or two that I have not moved into an album

A Good Hair Day of Sort

But definitely not with a strong Boston accent All of the holiday guests have gone home and things have settled back into there semi-normal routine around the house. As peace and quiet once again is the order of the day, it seemed like a perfect time to take a break from the mid-week routine and pull out my box of carded coins and look through them to see what I could find. Many of the coins in this box came from the coins my parents had collected and stashed away over the years. When my dad g

Life?s Little Laments

Sometimes the answers just fall into your lap Holy Cow! Today will be a story I will tell for a long time to come. My wife and I are both teachers as such money is tight. I?ve actually seen Lincoln cry a couple of times I have squeezed him so hard. To that end, coin collecting is much of a challenge finding coins for my sets as it is a challenge finding the funding to purchase the coins. I save my nickels and dimes for a very long time to afford key coins. Just recently, I started buildi

A Shiny New Year

A reflection of the year gone but not forgotten and a look toward the future In my house there is rarely a quiet moment. Chaos seems to have taken up permanent residency but my wife and I seem to thrive on it. I find my quiet and reflective time early in the morning, like now. So this morning I find myself looking back on 2009 and looking forward to 2010. I don?t make New Year?s resolutions. Things will change as they must in the natural order of time. (There is a line to a song I find quite a

A Conscious Decision!

Or maybe it was unconscious. After scouring the various auctions and market places for Eisenhower Dollars to populate my graded collection, I have decided that my first submission for grading will be my Proof Ikes. I have several still in their original government packaging. I will attempt to determine which of those are the best Ikes in my collection and where necessary pick up a few more proof sets to improve my odds. I looked at the population report and realized the odds are slim to none o

Common Cents?

A penny for your thoughts I have been collecting pennies for many years and I have a nice set of circulated Lincoln pennies in an album, I just recently started building graded sets, one for circulated coins recognizing my budget is limited at best, I decided that I build a MS66 or better set of circulated pennies and a PF69 set of proof memorial pennies. (I do recognize that PF69 also may be next to impossible to find in pre-83 pennies.) I?m finding the challenge to be both fun and intrigui

Yet, Another Step on a Long Journey

I thought I stopped worrying about grades when I graduated college. As I wade further and further into the waters of collecting graded coins I am finding that I am confronting a question that I am sure many collectors having passed this way have faced. ?Should I buy the graded coins to populate my collections or should I submit my ungraded coins?? Never having submitted a coin before, I am not quite sure what to expect. With a purchase, I can be relatively certain of what I am getting but with

How Much Is A Lincoln Penny Worth?

I gave away my most valuable coin. What is the most valuable Lincoln penny? The book value of a top pop 1909 S VDB or 1955 DDO is over $10,000. A 1922 will run you more than 10 times that amount at close to $125,000. I can safely say that these figures are not pocket change for most collectors and those prices are certainly well out of the range of my budget. Yet, I would argue that my most valuable penny was worth considerably more and I gave it away. One day in my class I was taking about

The Journey Not The Destination

Was it really In Lincoln's pocket? The snow was falling, there was a fire in the fire place and I sat in a recliner with my laptop. School had let out early for Christmas break due to the weather and believe me as a teacher, we look forward to the break every bit as much as the students. It was a quiet and peaceful evening of working, actually playing with my coin collections. (I say playing because to say working might imply that it is a joyless task.) And yet, there was not a coin in sight.

The Journey Starts

The Longest Journey Starts with the First Step Christmas is 12 days away now. My youngest sons will be with my ex-wife 1000 miles from here. Why is this important? It is worth noting because it was my youngest son who this summer re-ignited my passion for coin collecting when he became enthralled with state quarters. Over the years my coin collecting has been on a low burn. I started with ferreting through my parent's change for that odd looking or different coin. I got myself a few folders

A New Beginning

The Youth In Us All Well, I hit 50 this year. I've been collecting coins (and baseball cards) on and off since the late 1960's. Yea, I started young. This year my youngest son, 12 years old, took quite an interest in the State Quarters. I think it was the Grizzly Bear on Alaska that really caught his attention. Well, I dug out all of my old coins and the two of us started looking through everything and organizing sets. Through the eyes of my son, I soon found the hours of pleasure of looking t
