he Cunliffe Committee's insistence that demands for gold for export should be met was so far from being acted on that the gold standard was abandoned in March 1919 by the addition of gold coin and bullion to the list of articles which could only be exported under licence.

During the interwar period, the gold exchange standard (in which

foreign exchange reserves were convertible into gold at fixed prices) was undermined by

governments that expanded their holdings of reserve currencies relative to their gold

holdings, and Britain severed its link with gold in 1932. after going back to it in 1925 after being off it in March 1919
