Part 5 - Results of 400 SBA/Sacs

9 posts in this topic

I just bought 500 $1 coins from the bank today. 100 Presidential to look through, mintmark D (since I'm 20 miles from the Mint). As for the other 400:

1979 P (Narrow Rim) - 11

1979 D - 36

1979 S - 17

1980 P - 1

1980 D - 18

1980 S - 2

1999 P - 1

1999 D - 12

2000 P - 145

2000 D - 141

2001 P - 6

2001 D - 6

2002 P - 1

2003 P - 1

2005 D - 1

2005 S - 1

So, that's 97 SBAs and 302 Sacagaweas. The proof 2005 S is pretty scratched up, unfortunately. It also has slight wear, so it's probably around an AU-58 or so.

I probably won't be keeping many of these dollars since the Sacs are mostly toned, and I already have enough SBAs.

Part 6 will be from a box of half dollars I ordered while at the bank today and should come in around Thursday. smile.gif

Chris - How come you have '87 separated out? Is there a separate type that I don't know of there, or are you just making light of my OCD-ness?

The '87's were only released in the Uncirculated and Proof sets.

~The proof 2005 S is pretty scratched up, unfortunately. It also has slight wear, so it's probably around an AU-58 or so.~

I always thought, could be wrong, that once a coin is determined to be a proof, a distinct method of manufacture, along with the identifying S mint mark (especially if you know that no business strike coins for that year were produced in San Francisco) that it always gets a PR designation. Even if the coin grades below a 60, the PR still is used.

So the proof coin you found in circulation would in actuallity grade PR-58

Not picking on you, or correcting your post, but can someone confirm this or expound for future reference?

Thanks

That's what I meant. I have others I found (an 84 S PR-45) that I designated correctly ... just a type-o.

What Bob said is correct, but it also comes from first-hand experience. Over the last 30 months, I've searched 80 - $500 boxes and have yet to find a single '87. You would have a better chance of finding a Franklin (I found 3). The numbers I posted are just guesstimates of my recollections. I didn't keep any numbers.

Chris is probably right, I have only found maybe a half dozen or so 87 halves over the last 10 years and maybe a roll of Franklins.
