I wish I could say I was a serious buyer. What could a MS65 or 66 or even raw would be worth? Otherwise, for now, they're likely beyond my echolon of life.

If it were at all possible that I could contact this person or likewise?

Please let me know.

At one point perhaps a year ago I wrote a short history of the coins as it was related to me by the one time, and probably current, owner of this SP69 '64 JFK. This was over at the PCGS site. I will try to wade through their terrible search feature and find the post that I wrote, it may take a bit of looking but I will try.

TomB,

I remember that post and hope you find it. There was also a great article here in the NGC library that provided a timeline for all the 64 and SMS coins, as well as a good explanation of the 64 SMS sets. I think I remember them saying 12 sets. If anyone could provide a link to the article here, that too would be appreciated.

I'm stunned that I was able to find something through the PCGS search engine so quickly! I'm not bagging on PCGS here, they have some great features in their board, it's just that the search feature is not one of them. I could only find one thread where I wrote about these coins, so, I think I may have written something more indepth to someone in private. Here is what was written by me on 3/31/02, edited to take out the name of the dealer I had mentioned as the owner of the coins. I edited out his name because at the time I originally wrote this he was the current owner and was offering them for sale, however, they may have changed hands since then-

I don't recall the exact number, however, I believe ten to twelve sets were made of these, most likely to test the materials and equipment for the '65 SMS production series. Most of the surviving sets were acquired by an entertainer/numismatist whose name escapes me at the moment. After his death in the '80s these coins were sold from his estate (to XXX) and he owns more of them than anyone I know. He also owns the '64 JFK Specimen SMS69 in the NGC holder which, I believe, had been a PCGS MS68. The coin is still for sale as of the last FUN show. XXX is a great guy and will tell you about the coins if you are curious.

I know that a lot of people have been quoting the 10-12 sets made for a while, but that has to be too low. David Lange listed his estimate at 20-25 sets.

Given the frequency of these coins on the market (they are available non-stop) I would guess that the number of 25 might also be a little low.

I have also heard "talk" that more of these sets have been released into the market than thru the original Stacks hoard or whatever it is called.

I think that if I were the seller, I would be kicking myself for setting my reserves too high. That's at least 3x what the nickel's worth relative to the other pieces.

I'd rather have the Frankling half. While it was an ugly coin, at least Franklin was a great Amercian who contributed greatly to this country and the world. Kennedy on the other hand wasn't exactly a great person or president.

braddick, are you the guy that likes the P01 coins? I tried sending you a PM but couldn't, if you are interested, I might have one for you.

I don't want to go there, but it probably can't look worse than a banged up Kennedy. However, I would like to own a super UCAM silver Franklin and had they still been around, I could have gotten one since 1992.

It's been near impossible to find a super UCAM one that I like that isn't priced insanely.

I have to agree that the UCAM/DCAM Franklin halves look like a different animal than the rest of the series. In this instance they definitely, to my way of thinking, look better than JFK halves. A clad Franklin, though, would be a sorry site to see even before it went through a slot machine.

As for the '64 SMS coins, I just don't have the fire in me about them that so many people do. After all, their existence is not completely covered in open history, the grading services have trouble determining a business strike from an SMS even in the years they know both were made and, to me, there just isn't enough difference in their appearance to legitimately make me think they are worth anywhere near the prices they did not achieve.

A well struck clad Franklin would look real nice in Fine condition and I'd have another friend by now. Be bop a Lula. ...And a gem would be a sight to behold.

OK, I'll admit being more than a little curious now. I've found the archive that I need, and have requested the document I need. The archive is stored at the North Atlantic NARA site. It is described as follows:

Records Description

Dates: 1791-1971

Volume: 335 cubic feet

Records of the U.S. Mint, Philadelphia. The records relate to general superintendence of the entire U.S. Mint service, 1791- 1873, and to coinage, assaying, and other operations of the Philadelphia Mint, 1794-1971. Included are account books, correspondence, ledgers, minutes, registers, and reports.

Additionally, I have written the Dept.of Treasury, and the US Mint. I understand the key record deals with document GOV-0104. I'm sure it is available under the freedom of information act. I'll repost when I learn the history of these sets. wink.gif

Yes. I don't like them in "Casino PO01" condition but do in "pocket peice" smooth, hard PO01 condition.
