I have collected several CBH's that have scratches to the left of the face on the OBV. Did people do this to test for silver or if the half was real ?

Often these coins end up as pocket pieces for various individuals and the owner often inscribes something into the coin from what I have seen. Also heard that these have been used as a cutting surface for tobacco. Don't know about a silver test. I always thought that all they had to do was weigh the coin to see if it meets spec...
