1952 D Wheat Penny Fissure?
1 1

Hi everyone,

I am sending these pictures to get the groups take on this 1952 D penny. I know there is a lot of coin marks on it but aside from the obvious I would like some info on what may be going on.

The obverse has what looks like a fissure or something like that. I also see that the rim is almost non existant just above the hole at the 2:00 position. There seems to be at the 5:00 position some kind of damage or folding.

The reverse at the 2:30 position looks like some damage also on the rim. When you follow the rim down to the 5:00 position you see the rim kind of fades.

Now I also included some pictures of the edge of the coin where it looks like cracks or spliting.

Feedback please.

Unlike an error on a coin where you know how it happened, it is not always the case with damage.
There are so many ways for a coin to get damaged that unless you were there at the time, there is
no way of knowing exactly how it happened. Shouldn’t really matter though, damage is damage.

I agree with Greenstang it looks like damage to me maybe even heat damage.

Hello there Dan! :hi:

You are 100% CORRECT when you described these areas as damage!!!! And damage is damage no matter how it occurred.

As far as the cracks or splitting, if this coin was in uncirculated condition and exhibited no damage to it and had that feature, then we might have a case for a possible planchet flaw but with all of the damage, if this were to be an actual planchet flaw, it would be a really tough sell at the grading table.
