1983 P Jefferson Nickel

Hello all,

I have been trying to do my homework on error-ref.com.

I think what I might have is Severe Die Wear, specifically Radial Flow Lines and Orange Peel Texture. The nose and cheek also seems to have something going on.

Would someone shed some light on that I have and is it worth keeping. Granted there are some who like to collect such error, but is it really worth keeping?

I think that your analysis is correct. This 1983-P nickel appears to have been struck from a well-worn die pair. This isn't the sort of coin I would want to collect, and it is only collectable as a novelty, but if it only cost you a nickel, it is worth keeping for educational purposes if nothing else.

Aside from being struck by a very late stage set of dies (this coin probably didn't look good even before it circulated), given the amount of circulation wear I think it would be difficult at this point to claim there to be an error even on the face of Jefferson. That metal could have been ground off long ago and the heavy circulation wear was enough to wear off all the edges of where it was ground off along with the tiny lines from whatever abraded it to make it look like that.

It is very difficult on coins with this level of wear to be able to solidly ascertain whether a coin has a legitimate mint error or not, especially in this kind of case. Things like clips are a little different even with wear, but this would be really difficult to ascertain if that is from damage/grinding or lamination. I think it is too worn to get the nod and in reality even if it were to be a legit mint error, it is not going to add much premium to the coin with it in the current condition it is in.

The irony of the nose injury and the cheek injury is that they match the locations of my two most recent skin cancer surgeries. How did they know?
