A stye in the eye of that Jefferson guy

I found a bunch of Jeffersons with what looks to be some kind of impact to the eye.  I can't explain it well enough, so I hope the pics will suffice.  I have come across quite a few of these "styes" so far between 1956-1962, so it seems not to be too special.  Just curious what it is.

So, I guess I missed something with this post?

I do not think you missed anything. Did you check DDO references for the coins if nothing matches up, I will say it is PMD unless you have more than one coin with the same defect, date and mint mark.

I think that these coins show minor die chips and/or die erosion in the area of Jefferson's eye. If you find these quality control issues interesting, you are welcome to collect them.

That is my thought as well.  My curiosity was piqued because of the span of years encompassed.  I am up to 1970 on my 7k nickel odyssey and I have seen this from 1956 to 1969, so far.  I assumed someone out there was familiar with this.

There is a wealth of information on eye styes, causes, symptoms, treatment, etc. but unfortunately, it is applicable only to living persons. Judging by the lackluster response to your Topic thus far, I am guessing while there's something there, evident to anyone who cares to look, there just isn't enough "there," There, to make a difference numismatically. Had there been a discernible pattern in the surface mayhem, I believe that would be sufficient to generate interest. The problem here appears to be the randomness of the quality control issues inflicted and sustained. .
