Cams
I've been trying to figure out what this type of "error " this is? Is it a die clash? Thank you for your help
Greenstang
Certainly not a Die Clash. It has been struck through grease or grit. There are also circulation dings on it. J P M and Mike Meenderink
powermad5000
Most definitely not a clash. It is however a pretty decent strike through error. I have several but only one close to the level of area that exists on the coin you have. It is not always possible to tell what it was struck through, and in the event that cannot be determined, it will not be noted on the holder if graded by a TPG. Example A : The label in the slab says MINT ERROR - OBV STRUCK THROUGH WIRE. Example B : MINT ERROR - OBV STRUCK THROUGH. Your coin would most likely be in the example B category and will say OBV & REV STRUCK THROUGH. Nice strike through! Sandon
Coins struck through blobby foreign matter, often generically referred to as "grease", are fairly common and nothing new. They are not considered major mint errors or generally worth much of a premium, although I haven't seen many with the coin struck through foreign matter on both sides. I found various progressions of a similar obverse strikethrough on a variety of 1856 large cent. See 1856 Large Cent Mystery - US, World, and Ancient Coins - NGC Coin Collectors Chat Boards. powermad5000
This is one of my three errors I found in cash register change. It is not quite as affected as the OP's coin however. Cams
J P M
Welcome Cams, to me that looks like struck through grease. I have found quite a few of these when putting the quarter folders together. I just save them for another time. I am not big on send coins out to be graded I am too cheap.
