"By way of this email I’d like to share some momentous and exciting news: Whitman Publishing has been acquired by another firm well known and respected in the collectibles community—CDN Publishing. The acquisition has been in the works for some time, and was made official yesterday (October 31, 2023)."

John Feigenbaum is Chief Executive Officer of CDN.

CDN publishes The Coin Dealer Newsletter, better known as the "Greysheet", the quarterly CPG Coin & Currency Market Review, and similar publications.

I don't know how this will turn out, but it is preferable to Whitman being acquired by a general publishing company that would be unfamiliar with the standards and needs of the numismatic community.  This is what happened to Krause Publications, whose publications have largely vanished from print.

Doesn't Krause put out currency books which are like the Bible for that set ?

Krause published several Standard Catalog's, world coins, banknotes, etc.. I would be completely on board if someone, CDN Publishing perhaps, picked up the pieces left over from when Krause was dismantled but I think there is pretty much zero chance of that happening. One of the problems of resurrecting Krause is that it was diced up into pieces, Penguin bought the publishing rights and Numismaster took over the cataloging if I remember correctly. Numismaster vigorously inhales at keeping up to date and why would Penguin publish the old catalogs with no new Pick #'s or Krause-Mishler #'s? It's been a few years now and newer, and better, catalogs have stepped in for some areas where Krause used to reign. Krause is dead, the only question left is what cataloging system/s are going to be used in the future. Right now it's looking like most everything will be specialized and that general, standard, catalogs will mostly go away.

That name rings a bell.....why ?

If you are referring to John Feigenbaum, he is the son of the late David Lawrence Feigenbaum, founder of David Lawrence Rare Coins.

I have the 27th Edition of the Standard Guide to U.S. Paper Money....and the 9th Edition of the Small-Size U.S. Paper Money.  Bought both about 8-10 years ago I think.

Much depends on access to distribution of physical books, so that is likely in the purchase agreement details.

That IS the most significant part of this for the hobby at large - the printed books. We can only hope this wasn't about the blue folders.

Krause is almost dead. Well, Chet himself IS dead, but you know what I mean.

CDN was acquired by Salzberg/Eichenbaum of CCG/NGC in 2015. Which was sold to Blackstone in 2021.

So this is really just a quiet proxy purchase by Blackstone.

Great.....Blackstone now owns the Red Book, Whitman Coin Shows etc. Can't wait for them to squeeze out more money!

When you see one of those two-roll clothes ringers at the bourse entrance, beware.

They're not needle-movers for Blackstone, which has about $240 billion under management as I recall.  These purchases are tiny.

They sure do.  I have a copy of the October-December 2023 issue of the CPG Coin & Currency Market Review. CPG was distributing them free at the just concluded Whitman Coin Expo and was selling subscriptions to the "Greysheet", which has for some time been in magazine form.

...the real question will be...does the whitman baltimore make money or lose money?...its been sliding past few years, less attendance, less dealers...past couple shows several no shows n more early departures, plus the downtown becoming much less desirable to be in, not good signs n corporate bean counters track these things....

Interesting....I know the regional shows can be squeezed by the nationals and post-Covid shows might be more of a luxury than a necessity for some dealers, attendees, etc.

The Bay State Show was an up-and-comer pre-Covid...I wonder if it is still getting traction ?

The Big 3 -- ANA, Long Beach, and FUN -- seem secure in their comfort zones.xD

Add in Central States, in Schaumburg, IL. The Big 4.

I take it ANA moves all over the country ?  And I recall someone saying that CS was declining pre-Covid....still the case, or an upturn since ?

I think I may have confused Central States and ANA since the ANA shows I tracked were mostly in the Midwest.

What about NYINC?

Size wise, NYINC is NOT a particularly big show. But for the specialist in world, ancient, and even medieval to Renaissance coins, it should be a "must go".

The August ANA show does have a USUAL "between the Appalachians and the Rockies" emphasis. The March ANA moves around more.
