Hoghead515
We need to see a picture of the coin to give an estimate. The condition of it can affect the price greatly. Its a very common cent. There were over 409 million minted. If its been circulated then most likely face value. It would have to be a very high mint state to be worth anything. Indeed, photographic evidence would be beneficial in determining potential value. I think following the link provided above may be misleading to an individual less knowledgeable of coin collecting. There are aspects of the prices that you must understand in order to determine how your coin compares. It is imperative to determine which 1974-S penny you have. There is a Proof version as well as a Circulation version. Then, there is the matter of determining color variation and other potential attributes, which in the case of the 1974-S penny, proof or circulation, there are not many known. Pennies tend to be the most fragile coin out there due to the metals used to produce it. The price guide in the link is for coins that have been graded. Less than 400 1974-S pennies have been graded (by NGC) and only 1 coin has met the criteria for MS-67+ of a scale that reaches MS-70. The Unfortunate reality and the simplest answer to your query is that your coin is probably worth $0.01. My response may seem harsh, and I apologize in advance, but it is important to understand the reality of coin collecting. Many people watch You-Tube videos or read stories of crazy "pocket change" finds but it is never that simple. To give you an example, I am currently processing 18,000 pennies that my father has hoarded over the past 60+ years, a majority of which were obtained through marketplace transactions and the occasional parking lot scavenger hunt. (Yes we all pick that penny up!) I am 8,000 pennies in and have yet to find a unicorn. At this point, I would settle for a three-legged mule! Please post cropped pics and more insight to your coin can be provided to give you a more informed response. powermad5000
It is impossible to give you any type of assessment of the coin or its value without clear cropped photos of both sides of the coin.
