ANA World's Fair of Money
1 1

I attended the World's Fair of Money in Pittsburgh last week. After a disappointing Central States experience earlier this year, I was pleasantly surprised. Definitely a better selection of inventory and the displays and competitive sets were very interesting. There was the 20 or so empty tables like Central States but I was there on Tuesday so some dealers may not have arrived yet. There may have also been a VKurtB sighting.

I was able to purchase two coins for my collection, both nice for the grade.

I was also looking for a 1914-D VF/XF or a 1931-S 63/64 Lincoln Cent. There was plenty of inventory to choose from but my previous purchases exhausted my budget.

Already making plans to attend next year and I'll definitely plan on two days. The only bummer is I'll have to drive through Chicago.

I also picked up two better acquisitions. 1) a 1797 “cartwheel” tuppence in XF (raw), and 2) an 1825 British shilling in AU-ish (also raw). I picked up no fewer than 6 NGC Sample slabs.

I was only able to attend for about a day and a quarter as I had to return home for a medical emergency. She's fine - wasn't a stroke, it was a slipped disk.

Anyway @VKurtvB I'm actually aware of seven sample slabs...

Participant, finalist, and winner in Adult and YN

The Enhanced QR code.

Pics and permission to use for the Sample Slab book would be appreciated. Although ANA WFoM missed the 31 March 2023 cut off for the 3rd edition so it's not urgent.

Add in the Pittsburgh Transit Tokens from the Tuesday PAN dinner.

I assume you are referring to your wife. I am very glad she did not suffer a stroke. A slipped disk is bad enough, but a stroke can be devastating.

It's fantastic that you were able to add two nice coins to your collection from the event. It seems like you were also on the hunt for specific coins like the 1914-D VF/XF and the 1931-S 63/64 Lincoln Cent. While you had a budget constraint this time, it's wonderful that you're already planning to attend next year's event and allocating more time to explore. But many people love online casinos, by the way many interesting https://casinosanalyzer.com/online-casinos/ethiopian-birr-etb facts about casinos love to read. Driving through Chicago might be a bit of a downside, but hopefully, the overall experience of the event will make it worthwhile. Safe travels and happy collecting! If you have any more questions or need assistance, feel free to ask.

Every hotel of ANY size has shuttles to Rosemont hotels, plus it's ONE stop on the Chicago Transit Authority blue line. Not exactly tough to get to.

There are no neighborhoods between O'Hare and Rosemont. But I agree about Rosemont. It's time to bury it as a WFoM site.

[I would be remiss in my duty as a responsible member (and opportunist) if I failed to suggest my town New York, New York, as a suitable alternative to... what's that name?  Oh yes, yes, Rosemont. Sounds a lot more befitting the stature of a U.S.S.Ct. justice, than Pin Point, GA. (no offense to the Honorable Clarence Thomas) but I digress.

We've a bit of everything here for everyone.  Just be sure to bring your armored suits and don't forget to behave yourselves on public transport.  Maybe what I ought to do is make myself useful by giving the Moderators a much-needed break and work at putting out a special line of T-shirts simply reading, "I have been to New York City -- and SURVIVED!"]  🤣

There is literally a physical list of “no go to” states kept at ANA headquarters that is kept up to date each year. New York is at the very TOP of the list. Some cities in otherwise good states are ALSO on the list. Think Philadelphia. Union corruption issues.

...u r correct bout the big apple, more aptly the big cesspool or the swirl of death, the only time u want to be caught there with money is if its two rolls of quarters one in each hand to beat off the deadbeats n the criminals, used to be stop n frisk now its arrest n release...my last trip there was for the international coin show several years ago i vowed never to return n i have kept that promise...NYC, Philly n Chi town the big three not to go to, western Oregon isnt even a place anymore...couple those cities, the more corrupt u r the more advancement u receive, its a meritocracy...i can see the headline now..."WFoM in NYC, no one came"....

... but... but... what about the 50,000 migrants here, 500 of them housed in a decommissioned state prison only two blocks from my building? Who's gonna pay for their upkeep... food, clothing, and cho-ca-la-tay bars the little Peruvian ladies sell on the subways with papoose latched to their backs???  :hi:

I would strongly disagree.  Chicago is centrally located within the US and also has one of the largest airports (O'hare Intl.) within 5-10 minutes from the convention. The Stephens Convention Center is also huge, affordable, has numerous high end restaurants very nearby as well as theatres, a large casino, public transportation, etc. There are also numerous hotels literally right across the street and the Hyatt Regency is actually connected to the convention center.  The actual neighborhood in Rosemont where the show is held is NOT a bad area and the convention center has tons of parking, shuttle service, good security and IL is also a coin tax friendly state.

First time I have heard that expression used... coin tax-friendly. I know New York has a comparatively prohibitive sales tax, but coin-tax, per se?

It’s a case of horrendous overexposure. Too much already. PLUS, while it’s a great place to fly INTO, very convenient, it’s a pain in the backside to fly OUT OF. And if you’re too close to fly, and you have to approach it from the south, it’s a bloody nightmare. Also, world mints have made it abundantly clear they’re not interested even a tiny bit in Rosemont.

Yep, driving and approaching it from the south. Like I said, bummer.
