   The seeming additional "I" could indeed be due to corrosion or damage. It could also be a die chip (not rare or valuable) such as those frequently seen on cents and other coins from the 1950s and early 1960s, such as the once popular "BIE" and "LIBIERTY" chips. See the following topic:
