2003 P Jefferson Nickel - Penny Planchet 0

We found a 2003-P Jefferson nickel that appears to be stamped on a penny planchet. We looked online and can’t find much about it. I did read that in 2003 changes were being made to the nickel to get ready for the 2004/2005 nickels. Is anyone familiar with this 2003 error nickel we found? Or know anything about it? Thank u

Weigh it. A penny planchet weighs far less than a nickel planchet. Odds are you are mainly going by the color, which has many likelier explanations than an incorrect planchet. Another notable piece of evidence is that all the detail seems to have been struck onto the coin, which with a nickel die striking a Zincoln planchet doesn't seem very likely to me as the Zincoln planchet is much smaller and thinner. If it were theoretically able to be smashed flat enough to accommodate nickel detail, I'm not sure what would happen to it, but I suspect it'd be about the thickness of a dime.

A corroded nickel. The coin seems to have full rims which would not be the case if struck on a cent planchet. Weighing it would be a good exercise though, should weigh around 2.5g if a 2003 cent planchet, a nickel planchet is 5g I believe. Another good exercise would be to compare your coin to other known examples of a nickel being struck on a cent planchet. You'll get a lot of good experience and see a lot of amazing coins.

Looks like a well corroded nickel.

If it was struck on a cent planchet, it would not be full size and be missing some of the detail.

Welcome to the forum. The above answers are dead on. Looks like it spent a good bit of time in a corrosive environment. It is a spender, although a Coinstar machine would probably reject it.

Agree with everyone above, if this was struck on a cent planchet the lettering around the rim would be partially missing as a cent planchet is smaller.   Just a coin that most likely has spent a great deal of time in the ground.
