Nice pickups, Bill.  I do like British coins quite a bit.  I find them far more appealing than any American coins and they're a great area to get into....they have a lot to offer.  Thanks for sharing those with us.

Thanks Mohawk, I’ve gotten some great deals in just a few weeks of British coins, the 1937 and the 1944 are really special, beautiful coins. I will most likely buy more. I’m looking at Victoria and George V now.

Both Victoria and George V have some gorgeous coins.  I've always liked the Gothic Florin of Victoria myself.....that's a damned handsome coin, IMHO.

I’m up to 24 nice British coins now and

still growing.

:golfclap:

Thinking of focusing on a specific area of British coinage or just picking up examples that you like for now?

Well I began with a 2021 Brittania, the sort of started focusing on historical events, like the 1953 QEII coronation, the death of Winston Churchill 1965, the engagement of Charles and Diana, the coronation of George Vi 1937,  coronation of George V and coronation of Victoria. Last week I bought a set of 5 penny’s one from each of the last 5 monarchs. Now I am trying to get an 1887 silver 2 Florin. Mistakenly seen as a one Florin or two shilling coin, but have found out that in addition to having only 483,000 minted, there was a problem with the “1” with some being Roman then changing to Arabic somewhere that year making any Roman 1 a little more scarce. Because of decimalization in 1971, it’s harder to figure out what these old coins are worth, but most large coins were silver until 1971. Not sure what I will do next. Hmm  🤔

Sounds like a nice eclectic set so far, keep it going.(thumbsu

The Charles and Diana design always makes me shudder, the IoM 1/2 sov. is on my wall of shame for perhaps the ugliest design to ever be put on a coin. The IoM crown too.

Oh no......the U.S. Mint far outdid this in ugliness in 1995.  Remember this hot mess?

1995 Special Olympics Silver Dollar Commemorative Coin

I don't think you can beat this in the ugly competition.

My fiancée is a total techy.....she loves anything technology, so she bought one of the Edison dollars for her collection and I said the Bowers thing to her once.  Her reply "Now I can't NOT see Bowers!!! Thanks a lot!! It's always going to the the Dave Bowers dollar to me now!!!"  And, to this day, she can't unsee Dave Bowers when she looks at that coin.

Oh, that's up there too, Bill.  That thing is DREADFUL.  Truly another of the U.S. Mint's Greatest S*its.

Unpopular opinion time.  I also find this one to be awful as well:

The minute I saw this, I realized that Mellon had made the absolute right choice picking Flanagan's design, regardless of what the Commission of Fine Arts had to say on the issue.

Not quite as bad as the others. The Barney Gumble coin still gets my vote.

This is my favorite ugly in my collection.

1971 1/2 NEW PENNY GREAT BRITAIN COIN. Good Condition due to slight wear.

Lettering: ELIZABETH·II D·G·REG·F·D·1971

Translation: Elizabeth the Second by the Grace of God Queen Defender of the Faith (Elizabeth II Dei Gratia Regina Fidei Defensatrix)

Engraver: Arnold Machin

Reverse:

Central crown of St. Edward, denomination in letters above and numerals below.

Lettering:

NEW PENNY

½

Engraver: Christopher Ironside

Edge Plain

From Decimalisation Day on 15th February 1971, the production of the ½ New Penny was necessary since the old sixpence (with a decimal face value of 2.5p) continued in use up until 1980 and merchants had the ability to charge in nearly as small units as they could previously with the old money.

The Treasury continued to argue that the halfpenny was important in the fight against inflation until the coin became uneconomical to produce and consequently was demonetised and withdrawn from circulation in December 1984. Banks sent unused stocks back to the Royal Mint to be melted down, therefore less of the original mintage remains.

Mike, I like that coin. :taptaptap: lol

The Machin bust of QEII is maybe the best of the many depicting her, it's right up there with the Maklouf bust, for me, and the Ironside reverse looks good on this one. Of course, I'm also partial to world half penny's, being a collector of them.

We'll have agree to disagree on this one. (thumbsu

Not at all Mike I was going to look for the half penny today in m Brit’s. That latter Churchill coin looks like he ran into a wall.
