RJoe Posted August 17, 2021 Share Posted August 17, 2021 Good afternoon. This coin looked odd to me when I received it in change a few minutes ago. I took these photo's in order to get a closer look. It appears to be struck through a handful of miscellaneous hardware. Nuts, bolts, screws etc. The close up is at the base of the bust but if you look closely, you will find hardware items all over both front and back. I am curious as to how this may have occurred. Could the equipment have disinterested and caused this or did a mint employee toss a handful of junk into the works? I know it's just speculation but thought those of you with experience may have a different perspective. Also, would it be possible to remove the surface goo without technically cleaning it? And I am also trying to determine if it was struck more than once. Lastly, would I describe it as struck though hardware? You thoughts are welcome and appreciated! The distance between the faces of the dies is small enough that, had there been a nut, bolt, or screw in there, it would have made a much deeper impression than shows on your coin. Up here at 8000ft. Jason Abshier Posted August 17, 2021 Share Posted August 17, 2021 If anyone finds any sideway RPM “W” mintmark quarter stamped over P or D mintmark quarters those were made by me too . Very very rare I only made 3 of them with a special W punch tool and ball peen hammer . I got frustrated I couldn’t find any “W” quarters so I made my own and plan on sending them into grading to get my own variety for them . There's a couple I'll keep (especially the one my Dad found and gave to me and one other one with special meaning) but I may sell the other ones I found soon.
