What did somebody do to this coin?

An immersion in acid will eat the exposed copper core on the edge much faster than the copper/nickel clad layers resulting in a groove like this. This is a damaged coin worth only face value.

They have limited raw coins and currency to under $2500 (hence the $2499 price) at least which was a big step toward addressing the rampant fraud, and I saw one notorious currency seller have to stop his shilled auctions because of the $2500 rule.

Small beaker, vinegar, store bought peroxide solution, US copper-plated zinc penny, and pen knife.

 

Perform a short, fine, edgewise cut through the copper plate, and drop the penny into the solution. Slightly warm as needed.

 

Zinc gets eaten away, and before you know it, that penny is floating.

 

Remove, rinse thoroughly and dry.

 

Display your supernatural powers of strength to the unsuspecting by crushing a penny in your hand down to near nothing.
