My Recent Circulation Finds

9 posts in this topic

Hi there,

I've been having a banner few months finding obsolete coins in circulation:

On Thurday in change at my company cafeteria I received an 1892 Indian Head Cent in solid good!

On Christmas Day while looking through my mother's bucket of nickels at Harrah's Casino (located in Oceanside, CA - I think) I found a Buffalo nickel with a barely legible date of 1937.

Last November while rolling the change for my in-law's store I found a fine 1941-D Mercury Dime.

I've been looking through change since my childhood and have never found an obsolete type until these, with the exception of wheat back Lincolns and some occasional silver.

I'm pretty jazzed and I though this forum would be a good place to share my luck.

Any other good finds recently?

Hey, I just came back from Las Vegas. I got a 1937 5¢ in XF. I have to assume someone spent it from a collection since it is in good enough condition and it doesn't look like it has been banging around in a circulation for a long time.

I also got a 1943-S 5¢ and a 1945-P both in about VG. I think this is the third trip in a row where I have found a silver War nickel

Last time I was there I got a bunch of silver Kennedys, but none this time. frown.gif

Hi Greg,

I spend alot of time looking through coins in Las Vegas. My mother loves LV, and since she lives in New York and I'm in California it's a natural meeting place (keeps me away from the cold winters). Since I'm not much of a gambler there's plenty of time for me to pour over buckets of change.

I've wondered if there were silver Kennedys to find in Vegas. I thought the slot machines differentiated between coins and slugs by their weight and the somewhat heavier silver coins would not register. I've looked several times but never found a silver half, but I guess I should keep on looking!

I've gotten a few wartime nickels there myself.

What great finds!!! I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that times are a little more difficult right now, so people are spending what they wouldn't if times were better. I remember when I lived in New Jersey, I had a teller at the local bank that would save the halves for me, and about once a month I'd go and pick them up and sort though them. Invariable around the holidays, the number of Franklins and silver Kennedys always picked up. I really haven't found much lately, a few 1940s and 1950s nickels. I've never found an obsolete type in circulation other than Franklin halves and Ikes/SBAs. Congrats on the finds!

I've found silver Kennedys at several different casinos, so I assume that the machines recognize them using something other than just weight. The 40% are usually very easy to find. I'd pull a couple out of every $100 in halfs that I'd pull out of a machine. The 90% are harder to find, but they are still there. And I've heard of people pulling Franklins and Walkers out.

I usually have no problem finding silver nickels in Vegas. I'm convinced that you can put together a complete date/mint set minus a couple of keys in about a day.

I rarely find any halves of interest there, though, although I did pick up an impaired proof at a blackjack game in Reno once.

I guess my most interesting recent circulation find was two 2003-D cents. It's been REAL slow recently.
