Another newp with an interesting edge: 1834 O-117

14 posts in this topic

This is the type of thing that I like for my web site. Some sort of lamination issue going on on the edge of this one, and it is missing the word OR I believe:

The edge (as well as I can show it)

FIFTY and the lamination issue

After S in CENTS there is another issue: Either OR is on top of HALF or missing

The lamination starts after the * under the prong

Very cool, nice that you can see the reeding as well between the words.

1834 CBH's are lettered edge coins. The edge lettering reads "FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR * " The reeded edge series began in 1836. What you may be seeing as reeding is the lamination that the OP is pointing out. I do see an area of vertical bars within the edge lamination area, but that is not edge reeding.

Several of the lettered edge coins did have groups of vertical reeding between some of the words. I don't remember if the 1834 was one of these but it probably was as the reeding on the subject coin is clearly visible.

Conder you are correct. There is supposed to be vertical reeding lines in between the words so that the edge looks like FIFTY IIIIII CENTS IIIIII OR IIIIII HALF IIIIII A IIIIII DOLLAR IIIII

Though I guess not all have that exactly.

Here is the edge on my 1834 O-116

And here is what I think it should look like (1835 O-103)

If memory serves me, the reeding between the words was included in the 1830 - 1836 issues, though not on all varieties. On some the lines are slanted right or left.GOD BLESS...

P.S. Neat article in a recent CoinWorld about the advent of the steam powered press in 1836. It's the issue with the Indian Peace Medals on the cover. Until 1836, the coins were produced on hand operated presses.

Just looked at the edges of a '33 and two '36 s. The vertical lines are weak (not as deep as the letters) but the lines are definitely there.

Thanks for the education.

There's extensive information on producing edge designs and reeding in the book "From Mine to Mint."

That's an interesting comment. I would characterize the vertical marks I mentioned on my last post as being an edge design rather than reeding.

I'm buying "from Mine to Mint" to add to my numismatic education.

Yes, from what I recall the reeding was experimental in 1830 and 1831 and were in regular use from 1832-36, but as mentioned before not every coin has the reeding apparent, but it was in common use by 1834. And thank you Carl for reminding me that these are lettered edge issues.
