What is this exactly? (Silver bar?)

It appears to be dated 1982 and written in Korean. The central character on the box is "Good fortune." I'll check next time I go to the local dry cleaners.

Can you scan the document flat and at higher quality?

 

If so, then you can use this link to translate the "image" from pixels into the appropriate Korean characters (Choose Korean as the language): http://www.sciweavers.org/free-online-ocr

 

And then you can copy and paste the characters from the first link into this link to get a translation into English: http://translate.google.com/

 

I tried it with the image you have posted of the certificate, but it is of low quality and the certificate is folded, so it was obviously bound to fail.

Sweet! I'm curious how well the "techno"-ware will do at this task. Just out of curiosity, Ray can you still use the links I sent you to see if they work at all? These could come in handy for future detective work if they work well.
