How did this get past PCGS?

39 posts in this topic

Doing some research of past auctions on Teletrade. How did this not get bodybaged for AT?

http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=3037&lot=1764

Sorry, I am at work and can't post the picture. Feel free to post it in a response.

You're assuming facts not in evidence. It might very well be NT - it looks it to me - meaning it didn't "get past PCGS".

The picture that robec1347 is not the one on teletrade but very same type of toning. I guess if yall say it is NT then I still have some more to learn. Question, what causes the straight line of toning accross Franklin's head on both coins? That is why I thought it was AT in the first place. I figured NT just doesn't stop on a line accross most of the coin.

IT can be flaps of paper from an end-roll, sometimes can be from envelopes, and even sometimes harsh transition (toning to no tone) lines can occur from bag toning and/or other coins obscuring the coin during the toning process. I'm not an expert of toning, but there are lots of ways it could tone like that, IMO.

I'm assuming someone is very happy with their purchase...if they are willing to pay 30x the FMV of a coin for the psychedelic toning pattern. ;) To each his/her own.

EDIT: Added a pic of the coin in question from Teletrade.

The toning pattern appears to be the result of end roll toning, where the paper was folded over part of the coin..

It's that dastardly word "natural" again :) . The toning definitely seems "market acceptable" as they say these days. Although I wouldn't spend anywhere near $1000 on it, I'd definitely pay a premium for it.

I wouldn't buy it even with Mark's money. ;)

To each their own. :)

Enjoy your collection.

Neither would I...not so much because of the toning but because it's a Franklin. :shy:

MA is the ONLY thing that matters when it comes to the TPGs these days. NT vs. AT isn't really relevant....from what I can tell.

We coin people are surely a crazy lot. Only we would take something as thoroughly UNNATURAL as coins (which are shiny disks of refined metal, created at the hands of humans), and convince ourselves that anything "natural" can happen to them after that lol .

Don't feel sorry for the new owner of two of those end rollers out of the Teletrade auction. They were both resubmitted and one upgraded by a point and a half at PCGS. Both are in secure plus holders. The buyer of these two coins has since been offered a kings random for both of them. The buyer is a very savvy toned Morgan/toned coin specialist and felt these coins legit from jump street. They not only made it by PCGS once they did it twice. They obviously liked them as NT.

I don't own a slabbed Morgan or a Franklin of any sort.

To each is own. MJ

He probably wasn't "that good from a picture".

He might have seen the coins in person, before bidding. He might not have been thinking re-grade when he bought them. He might have been lucky or very lucky with the re-grades.

I would say luck did play a part in the success, but (and I am sure mark would agree to a point) there is a good chance that the person in question has bought and sold many coins through Teletrade and has learned over that time how to somewhat accurately judge the photos. Some people are able to grade the coins by photos a bit better than others, but there is still the factor of luck included in the endevor as well.

He wasn't looking for an upgrade. He wanted them to pass the vaunted sniffer test and get them in Secure Plus holders. The upgrade was a bonus. He was positive they were NT. MJ

As was the case with the OP, I don't understand why you think that coin "got by" PCGS.

I know nothing about this NZ piece. Is it CLAD or at least a nickel surface? It looks like an Ike or Kennedy that's been in a Dansco album...
