Opinions on this 1951-d Jefferson Nickel (Rainbow)

22 posts in this topic

Recent ebay purchase, which was for a great price because of the seller's bad images. So what do you'll think it will grade out?

P.S. There's a die crack on the reverse that starts at the top and goes down to the Monticello.

I like the toning. The detail looks about EF45.

Oh, wow. I was going to say MS-65

Unless this is a weak strike, which are common to these years, the Obv looks like it has some wear in the hair and the Rev looks pretty worn also.

Added, I'm not good at recognizing weak strikes against circulation.

It's definitely a BU coin. Yes the hair does look flat, as the strike is a little weak. But common for nickels of these dates.

IMO it should grade ms66.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. A coin with a weak strike cannot and should not get a grade higher than a 65 in my book. And if its a particularly poor strike, I'd bump it down to 64.

I would say it would go MS65 based on pics, it does have a few tick marks - but I just got one back with a huge gash on the cheek and it is a 65. Mine is a bit dark to get a star, but yours might if you send it to NGC.

Jon,

I think it will grade MS66 at NGC but I don't think PCGS will go above MS65 unless the luster is fantastic. It is hard to tell about the luster from those photos. Normally I don't mind planchet flaws, but the flaws on the shoulder of this coin seem distracting to me.

Are the colors of the coin iridescent? The photos look as if they were taken at an angle to help show the color.

What a beautiful nickel! You have a good eye when it comes to finding well toned coins as you stated that the photographs were not very good. Congratulations on your new acquisition!

The obverse has blazing luster that makes the toning vivid rainbow, the reverse luster is more subdued because of the toning. The images are taken at a slight angle to help bring out the color instead of focusing on the other qualities of the coin.

The coin isn't that weakly struck, the images make it look worse since I was focusing on bring on the color.

Mike I like your example as well! It has very similar toning to the obverse (the green/blue/magenta toning}. But yours has a nice hit on the obverse chin, which makes me think mine will go ms66.

But either ms65 or 66, I would be happy. I will update this thread when I get the results back from grading.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
