In addition to the information in this post, I just posted a reply below with the infiormation recently sent out by The Numismatic Crime Information Center.

I was not at the show today. Lee called me for help in getting word out about this event, including posting here.

This was reported to the South St. Paul Police, who can be contacted @ 651-322-2323; Case # 10012343; Det. Julie Bishop @ 651-554-3310

Terrible news. I hope that the local police are being helpful. If you could get the cert. numbers from him on the coins that were stolen, it would help people track them down. Be sure to post this over on the PCGS forums too.

That is jaw dropping...just at a quick glance and with my poor math skills it looks like there is well over $100k worth of coins there.

I don't travel with any amount of coins and have never even attended a coin show because of my location, but I would think hiring a security guy for a day when carrying that much might be worth the extra cost.

I know I am always amazed at how loose my local coin shop guy is to let me see all the gold coins he has just sitting under the counter unlocked during the day. You guys who are dealers really need to be careful these days. There seems to be a story on here about once a month of something like this happening.

Glad to hear the guy is alright as well, hope he had good insurance.

This is unfortunate for this guy. It's sad that the current recession has desperate people doing desperate things.

The time and work all numismatists invest in building their collections just to have some P.O.S. take it from you.

Unfortunately most of these coins are common dates and raw so the likelyhood of recovery is quite slim unless the thieves are really stupid and try to sell them all at once to a dealer who knows about the theft. If they put them in new holders and selll a couple here and there over a period of time, they won't get caught. That's one advantage that paper money has over coins is that they have serial numbers that make them identifiable.
