Got the coin late yesterday and will image it today. I hope to turn it around today as well (Robert, please send PM me the next victim's address).

 

It's a doozy. Technically, it's no problem capturing the right color, but I would end up with the kind of non-luster images that are not my preference. I will say that the coin appears to be a legitimate candidate for simple SOLB lighting.

 

Looking forward to some shots this afternoon, and hopefully getting it back in the mail!

Sounds like I would try axial lighting, if it was available. Can't wait to see these pics !

 

What is SOLB ?

 

Another thing I would try is 2 fluoro plus 1 LED light. LED brings out color fine

Yep, and I found it to be an effective way of lighting the coin in question. However, I had to try all sorts of crazy tilted angles to get the effect I really wanted - nearly dropped my camera off the table! I couldn't shoot this image hand-held, and had to bolt the camera into the copy stand to keep her steady enough.

 

Although my images are shot with a SOLB, I did have to play around a lot with reflected ambient lighting to get the surface texture depiction that I wanted. It also took a much brighter bulb than what I usually work with (15 watts). And since I had to get a really bright bulb, I had to use a standard incandescent, which changed my white balance.

 

VERY tough coin to image for me, anyhow, and I had to strive for compromise between color, surface texture and avoidance of shadows.

 

I've already sent Bob links to my final 640 x 640 images.

Almost there! After playing around with the coin, I can assert that this is the hardest coin I've ever had to photograph!

 

Bob, I don't know how you are planning to do the voting, but if I could make a suggestion: it might be best to do it in stages - narrow it down to semi-finalists in the first round (for example, have voters pick their favorite five of each side). Then in the final round, pick the best.

I should have thought about the idea earlier about the possibility of having two winners, one for the obverse and one for the reverse. That happened in an earlier contest I was entered in. I just got lazy in deciding one winner, but it's fine with me if there is the possibility of having two winning sides. $100 per side. I like your idea also of picking the top 5 of each side and then the champion(s). The final results with be in combination with the total votes from both NGC and PCGS.

In order to come up with a winner there will be four groups to vote on. Each group will contain the finished images (obverse and reverse) of seven contestants. There will be separate voting on obverse and reverse images.

 

You will vote on your favorite obverse image and favorite reverse image from each group. The four group winners of the obverse image and the four group winners of the reverse image will be included in the finals.

 

The voting on the first four groups will run for one week. The final tally will include the votes from both NGC and PCGS message boards. The final group will also run one week. Contestants with the most votes for obverse and reverse images will each receive $100, although it is possible for one person to walk away with $200. No names will be used until the voting is over.
