QUESTION:

 

What is the only United States coin issue counterstamped at the U. S. Mint?

The 1848 Gold Quarter Eagle. Counterstamped CAL which was punched above the eagle on the reverse side while the coins were still in the die.

Many consider the 1848 2 1/2 dollar gold piece counter stamped "CAL" to be the first U.S. commemorative coin, as it commemorated the finding of gold in California.

The San Francisco Mint in 1949 produced an 1898 dated 1 Peso restrike originally minted in the Mexico City Mint??

I know the answer, even though I am late... it's the CAL stamped on the 1848 gold dollar coin.
