Will these rolls ever be worth more than face?

32 posts in this topic

When the presidential dollars came out I tried getting and keeping a few rolls of them to hold on to on the assumption that one day they might be worth something. I ended up with 2 George Washington rolls and a John Adams roll. After that I went back to school, away from banks and lost the ability to keep going with getting the rolls. I've held on to these rolls for a year at this point, letting $75 sit at home and do nothing. I've begun to worry that I may just be kidding myself and these rolls will never be worth anything more than face. My step-father insists that it's worth it to keep them, but I think he's using the older coinage as a precedent when the cases are clearly different in both the number of coins made and the composition of the coins, the new dollars melt for 7 cents.

I'm thinking:

1) The mint made too damn many of the things and there are too many people doing the same thing.

2) They're incomplete, I've missed 4 presidents

3) I'm already building a set of MS65/66 First Day of Issue coins that mean more to me than these rolls ever could

4) The $75 could go towards building other parts of my collection that I enjoy more.

Who do you guys think has the right side of this arguement, me or my step-father? Do I have something that'll be valuable later on or do I have a $25 roll of coins?

I agree with the others here. Open them and look for errors. An errored coin will probably be worth more than saving the unopened roll.

I think this is the most important part, and it's what's driving me lately to start weeding out some of my collection. It's doubtful that these will be worth too much more than face value, so if you would rather spend the money on other coins than keep these, then you should, well, spend the money on other coins.

He means that your great-great-great-great-great-great grandchildren will probably get $25 for each roll.

Since you haven't kept the series current by buying the other Prez rolls, I agree with everyone else. Go through them for any errors. One error coin could probably recoup the cost of a roll. Spend the rest!

I don't know, with that many greats and the current rate of inflation.... think of the future melt value... if there's still a dollar at that point. lol

How many "unlettered edge mint errors" might be in those rolls? (shrug)

Put them on e-bay unopened at $25+ S&H and word it like the COIN VAULT would.

I'd think you'd double your money.

L@@K!!!!! ;)

Yes, there's evidence to support that. There are some insufficiently_thoughtful_persons paying as much as $35 + Shipping for these rolls. I can pretty much promise you that there are no mint errors in these rolls though, I'm just not that lucky.

Then don't open them. Sell them on e-bay to someone who thinks they are lucky. Maybe they are. Maybe they are not. You've made more than face and they've had a chance to make a score. As long as you don't promise an error you've done nothing wrong if there isn't an error. Play up the possibility of winning instead of the near surety of losing.

The number ONE rule for coins, when treating them as investments......

If you plan on putting something away it MUST be scarce or rare RIGHT NOW !

William ,

When ya get a little time , sit back and bust'm open and go through them looking for all the error stuff ( missing edge lettering , missing clad layers , odd shapes , die clashes , dropped letters , wrong planchetes , etc) .....also , set aside the best coins with the fewest marks and the better strikes .....then add up the rest and deposit the money into your savings . Have fun with it and all . They made bazillions of these and released tons of them . There are far too many people hoarding these to expect any kind of return worth the wait for them to become investment vehicles . If you wish to invest , then get educated first(on which coin or other investment you like the best) and then make your best guess ....try watching proven performers ...but even so , there are no guarantees....there is , however , proven non-performers like vastly hoarded non bullion coins like these that were produced with their current metal content expressly for the intent of being used in commerce and not for future value.

If you find ,in the rolls, a few high-grade coins or even an error or two , they will be much more valuable than the commons as time goes by , yet the commons will all be worth only what the buying power of $1 will net you.

Guess you could sell them on ebay and make money off some poor fool or some elderly old lady trying to do something for her grandkids. But just because the mint got you is no reason to pass it on and encourage others .Next thing you know your hanging out at the

How about rolls of 2000 P or D Sac dollars?

Thanks for the thread, "Ravenut". (What does Ravenant mean, anyway?)

I have a roll of 2000 Sac and a couple of Presidential rolls. I didn't know what to do with them. Now, I'll follow everyone's advice and search them for errors or ultrahigh grades and spend the rest.

Better yet, I'll keep some at the hospital and pass them out to the kids. I did this when the bison nickels came out.

Well, it helps to spell it right (and you're still not). ;)

From Merriam-Webster:

revenant

Main Entry: rev·e·nant

Pronunciation: \ˈre-və-ˌnäⁿ, -nənt\

Function: noun

Etymology: French, from present participle of revenir to return

Date: 1818

: one that returns after death or a long absence
