How many active mints are there in the world? How many "mints" in the US?

How many mints are there in the world that produce legal tender circulation coins?

I know the Royal Mint, Royal Canadian Mint, and US Mint have produced and do produce coins for many nations.

How many "mints" are there that produce collector coins (NCLT) and medals?

I see medals offered by "mints", but I get the feeling the actual production is probably subcontracted to someone else.

Here's a photo by Fred Weinberg of the Shanghai Mint - not exactly a basement operation. In fact, much of the original minting equipment there came from the US Philadelphia mint so the same equipment could have made legal tender coins in Philadelphia and Shanghai.

The Franklin Mint has issued legal tender coins for countries during the 70s. They stopped their coin business during the 80s but have recently restarted some coin activity.

Here are some current minters of tokens and medals:

Tough call.

I'd guess around 75 government mints striking coins for circulation.

This could be high since there are usually only about 35 listed with addresses.

I'd have guessed higher since there are around 190-200 countries in the world. While many of those countries don't mint their own coins, there are other countries that have multiple active mints which might help even it out.

This is from my research on the topic. This list is in no way complete, but I think I found the information on a significant number of world mints:

Austria: Austrian Mint AG

Australia: Royal Australian Mint, Perth Mint

Belgium: Royal Belgian Mint

Brazil: Casa Da Moeda Do Brasil

Canada: Royal Canadian Mint

China, People's Republic of: China Gold Coin Inc. (CGCI), Central Mint of China

Czech Republic: Czech Mint

Finland: Mint of Finland

France: Monnaie de Paris

Germany: Verkaufsstelle fur Sammlermunzen der Bundesrepublik

Great Britain: Royal Mint

Great Britain: The Birmingham Mint

Great Britain: Pobjoy Mint Ltd

India: India Government Mint, Alipore Mint Kolkata

Indonesia: Indonesian Security Printing & Minting Co.

Israel: Israel Government Coins and Medals Corporation

Italy: Zecca di Stato - Istituto Polografica e Zecca dello Stato

Japan: Japan Mint

Korea, South: Seoul Mint

Netherlands: Royal Dutch Mint

New Zealand: New Zealand Mint

Norway: Royal Norwegian Mint

Poland: Polish State Mint, Mennica Panstwowa S.A.

Portugal: Casada da Moeda

Russia: Mezhnumizmatika

Singapore: Singapore Mint

Slovakia: Kremnica Mint

South Africa: South African Mint

Spain: Spanish Royal Mint, Fabrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre

Sweden: Swedish Mint, Nordic Coin AB Svenska Myntverket

Thailand: The Royal Decorations and Coins Division

Turkey: Turkish Mint

United States: US Mint

Vatican City: Filatelico e Numismaticoa

I tried to keep the list to those I know strike coins, although I think the Vatican City facility is a management and distribution operation that does not strike coins. There may be some (like China Gold Coin) that only strike NCLT coins.

I hope that helps.
