OK . . . Everyone post your 63s so we can see what Mike is talking about!

Here's one. The luster is a bit better than the photo shows, although not much, because it's a fairly early die state with with minimal flow lines. "True" 63 :) or net graded for undesirable problems : You be the judge.

Here are all the 63s I own (along with the "problems" I believe resulted in the net grade)::

MS 63: (impared luster)

medium.jpgmedium.jpg

PF 63: (impared mirrors/spotting)

medium.jpgmedium.jpg

MS 63: (hairlines/scratches)

medium.jpgmedium.jpg

MS 63: (AU 63)

medium.jpgmedium.jpg

MS 63: (true 63)

medium.jpgmedium.jpg

If I had it all to do over, I'd probably only keep two or three of them....Mike

p.s. IGWT, your coin looks to me and from the pics, to have some rub/luster issues, or what I would call a nice eye-appealing AU 63.

Here are a few MS63's for illustration.

A half dime with some dark toning on the obverse that probably accounts for the grade:

A Standing Liberty quarter with a few marks and killer luster:

A gold eagle with minor hits on Liberty's chin and minor strike weakness on the eagles shoulder:

here are a couple of truly Mint State 63s in Bust Half land (not that all are)

the 1835 is truly Mint State but with cabinet friction...signigicant cabinet friction, but surfaces that are at least 64 in quality.

I have too many 63's to post....sorry Tom :sorry:

But I don't know if I can agree or disagree with Mike's perceptions about the grade of MS63 because I would have to sit down with him and discuss it in detail. To post my opinions here would probably benefit no one as I would be putting words in Mike's mouth and may have totally missed the point he was trying to make in his thread (thumbs u

Let me just say that I like MS63's from a price vs quality standpoint but if I can afford it I will stick with MS64's and Higher.

That's a fair assessment. It has little luster (like a good percentage of Shield 5c), but I think that it was most likely made that way. IMHO, this is the kind of coin for which a 60 grade fits nicely, but that grade now carries too much negativity in the market. I like the coin quite a bit . . . but some coins widely regarded as "ugly" appeal to me.

The grade of 63 is one that I do not own in my collection
.

Well go buy one so you can play along!

snob :kidaround:

I think Mike is just giving me a good-natured ribbing, but I will explain my first response in case others are not sure what it means. hm Most of my theoretical box of 20 and most of the value of my collection are coin in grades below MS63. I am a big collector of early, Federal type in choice VF-EF so this precludes the MS63 or PF63 grade. The remainder of my collection is generally in higher graded type.

TDN,

I'll take that 1855 off your hands :cloud9: , it's probably bringing you down knowing that you have 63's in your collection anyway.

Look at it like i'm doing you a favor.

Ray

:) Never seen the NGC64 ... but there's nothing finer than 63 at PCGS.

I love MS63s

They are affordable even for a guy like me. :)

As I like to accumulate rather than collect, I'll take two MS63s over one 65

I also have some nice(at least to me ) looking MS61/62s

This 1869 dollar is in a PCGS PR-63, Cam holder. I think the "CAM" may have been handed out the way NGC does with the * because I don't view this as a CAM coin. The toning is a bit heavy in spots and it's not totally attractive. Still it is totally original and never dipped with marks or hairlines consistent with a PR-64. Therefore maybe PCGS gave it a CAM for the near miss aspect of it.

This 1833 half dollar is in a PCGS MS-63 holder. It is original, but the luster under the toning is not exciting. In its favor however is that the coin does not have a "white nose" which seemed to crop up all to regularly on "Mint State" Bust half dollars.

Judging by all the nice 63s in this thread, looks like I'm just full of hot air...or the collectors on this forum have a nice eye for coins...or, perhaps most likey, a little of both....Mike

You just need to hand pick 'em. Lots of K-rap out there in '63 holders...

After looking at these 63's, it occurs to me that, in most cases, the grade will never be questioned as lower. I've seen some 65 holders that I really didn't agree with. None of these (with the 1 poss exception that I won't name) look like less than 63, some much nicer!

So, if the price is right, perhaps it's not such a dangerous grade.

I look for strike in Walkers, it's very unusual to find one with this amount of details as a 63 (usually a full skirt and thumb + undipped luster grade as 65+)...kinda wish all 63's looked like this, I'd save some money (thumbs u
