I'll tell you what would be a KICK*** feature that might or might not be feasible using today's emerging AI technology.  If the program had that macro feature of Excel which is able to "grab" live data -- Excel can grab it from Bloomberg, from the Web (like stock quotes from Yahoo Finance, etc) -- and input it into a matrix to develop data points of interest to collectors or dealers.  You could be the default program for collectors much like Bloomberg is the default program for fixed-income/bond investors.

Getting prices -- historical and recent -- is something that is very time consuming.  If your feature could grab the data from various websites -- NGC, PCGS, HA archives, Ebay, GC, etc. -- and then download them and maybe "crunch" them in a smart manner (i.e., throw out highest/lowest 2 prices, average, weigh recent sales more, etc.) -- I think that would be a kick- feature.

Maybe it's not currently (technologically) feasible...maybe you can't access some of the data at certain sites....I don't know, I'm not an expert in this stuff.  But an interactive matrix that could access electronic websites that dealers use and the ones I listed above would really be useful to folks.

I just know that if it had that feature....and it if was able to download HUNDREDS of data points in a second instead of me/others having to punch up lots of searches over multiple websites... that would be one kick*** feature, one I would STRONGLY consider using...and paying for. (thumbsu

    Hi, thanks for the comment!

Right now we are in our free beta. Our plan is to keep the beta free for inventory management and other features as they relate to coin collectors. For coin dealers, we plan to build additional advanced features like expense and sales accounting.

I think AI will play a large role in how we build out our platform to come. I think it has great potential for price tracking and analysis! We would like to eventually crack pricing for rare coins, but we have historically struggled to form data partnerships as we are small and provide little value to large companies. Some sales data is retrievable but most is proprietary to the auction house/sales platform. I think as we grow this will change!

I think what you are talking about with pricing is certainly feasible! I would love to explore this more as our resources and user base grows! Thank you very much, and I hope you have gotten the change to test out our inventory tracking beta!

I have not tried your software myself as I am comfortable with my current way of tracking my collection and did not relish the thought of the time involved to convert all my info over to a new system.   And before I started my business I was an accounting manager, so I doubt I need too much help in that regard either.   But just a couple of thoughts of the top of my head if you are going to tailor this to collectors.

Make sure your software has the ability to track all the costs.   Beyond the original purchase cost a collector may incur additional costs during the time he/she owns a coin.  Costs like sending to CAC, cost to reholder a coin, costs to have professional photos taken (including all shipping and handling costs).   Many collectors never record all these ancillary costs and do not really know the true full cost of a coin in their collection.   Perhaps a place to record insurance costs, bank vault costs, costs to attend shows or auctions could also be a useful tool for those that want to track the full nut costs of coin ownership.   And of course disposal costs should be included too.   My specialty was cost accounting so my mind just works that way. :makepoint:

I'm not a dealer so I will not attempt to provide any feedback in that regard.

Thank you for this comment. We are building out the accounting piece at the moment, as well as ways to import your collection easier (such as from a spreadsheet). We will certainly account for other expenses not solely related to the actual coin itself. I would love to build our system out to the point where someday you might find it useful!

You with all the wisdom and experience of your 23 posts here have declared a large amount of "angry collectors"..Doesn't that tell you something about you?

Thank you for your input on the thread! I pay attention to the helpful comments and the not so helpful. I'm doing my best to learn what I can and improve my project accordingly! I am sorry to have offended you with my post, but I would remind you that commenting on it in the first place is a choice you do not have to make.

  4. As many of you may recall, we launched www.RaritiesValue.com a couple of months ago as a free tool to manage your coin collection or rare coin inventory.

We are now working on accounting software for dealers to help manage sales, expenses, profits and invoices. We hope to finish this module and push it live before the end of the year.

MY QUESTION TO YOU: What are problems that you face as a rare coin dealer, collector, or investor? What tools can we build to help make your life easier?

Same here. I use paper also. Im still yet to buy my first computer. Never owned one. My son has a lap top I use sometimes. Not very good with it though. I use my phone to get on this website. I also put a few coins on NGC registry. It helps to keep track of several of my certified coins. I keep all my coins recorded on paper in a zip up 5 star note book. I keep it in a fire proof safe. I also keep all the receipts of coins I purchased in the safe. I keep a mean wife watching over the safe.

Im learning a little more each day about websites and technology. Im light years behind most people my age with computers. One question I have @RaritiesValue.com. Can you access your website by phone or do you have to use a computer?

Hello! You can access https://www.raritiesvalue.com on your smartphone, yes! It would work just as if you are viewing any website on your phone. I would recommend using a computer for the best experience but the option is there. Also, we hope to be working on a mobile app sometime in the near future but I don't have a timeline for that yet.

Our skepticism is hard coded into our demographic. Coin collectors trend older. Even those of us who WERE THE ORIGINAL COMPUTER GEEKS, eventually get over it as we age and experience the considerable downside of computer dependence. I appreciate tech less and less with every passing month. I am pretty darned close to literally hating tech now. And I haven’t even told my first kid to get off my lawn yet. I wrote scads and scads of code in the 80’s and 90’s. I got over it. Some of the most severely wasted time in my life. As tech got more capable, its most robust increase in capability became destroying privacy, mine and everybody else’s. I will NEVER forgive the tech industry for that loss of privacy. Would I willingly go back to the 1960’s and 1970’s, knowing what I know now? Abso-stinking-lutely!

This is an interesting and certainly valid perspective! I will admit that I lack any experience of computers and the tech atmosphere of the 80's or 90's. I hope that I can help lead my generation in building secure and trusted platforms to enhance collecting. I think it's where the world and hobby are headed. I would not want losing an entire generation of collectors to be the result.

...basically true...but everything digitally stored or cloud associated is retrievable from external sources...every keystroke...ill just have to buy extra fire extinguishers n pray...but good luck on providing a competitive repository source for collectors not as skeptical as myself....

I appreciate your comments! Will return the prayer and hope you never have to worry about the fire extinguishers :)

...yes...its called paper, usually rectangular n mostly thin in thickness, can be written on with pencils of which r cylindrical in length round or with faces composed of wood with a graphite core, used to annotate on the paper coins in possession of or needed, can be carried or stored in safe places, impervious to electrical outages, hacking, electronic snooping n free of surcharges or fees, strong points r privacy n secure from unauthorized surveillance, weak points r cockroaches, mildew n fire....

why anyone would want to make available an itemized list of their coins in a "cloud" or other managed atmosphere where it can be observed n which can be blocked to ones access either intentionally or by grid failure is beyond me...yes registry sets obviously r public information, but they r openly made public by the owners for whatever reasons n yes, they can perform as inventories of ones coins at the same time...collectors should be vigilant of making accessible inventories of anything...have u ever heard of subpoenas?....

If you have a highly private collection and are concerned to the point of subpoenas and grid failures, I think you require something far beyond what we are trying to build. I won't lie to you, this might be for the more casual collector or dealer! However, I would challenge you and suggest that digitally storing records in addition to paper copies may be more secure. We are consistently working and improving security and transparency with user data. Our business model currently comes from subscriptions and not from using or selling your coin collection data.

I think losing, or having physical copies damaged is a much more problematic scenario than digital assets. Our export feature allows you to backup your collection on a spreadsheet locally to your device if you choose. You could download a spreadsheet and backup your collection at any time and that information will be stored off the cloud on your computer if you so choose.

It's too late for me to move my collection to a new site or program. I keep a lot of notes that would have to be moved over. I have 15 to 20 fields of data on each coin right now. Using rough math, it would take me over 500 hours of work to move everything over. I'm too old to take on such a task. The free time I have now is going towards imaging and having fun.

I understand! We are working on an import feature which would allow you to put in your current spreadsheet and easily upload your coins to the platform. Of course this is totally your call but I see the problem you are presenting and we are constantly working on improvements. Thanks for the comment

To the fellow creating this site I would like to offer one small piece of advice.  Don't be like Coin World.  About 20 years ago the Coin World publication put up a site for collectors to use for inventory and reference purposes.  It was not an easy site to use.  Yet I put a huge number of hours into logging in my entire collection.

One day I went to log in a coin and the site simply was not there.  I had been there the previous day and thought they might be doing some sort of maintenance.  So I call Coin World to find out when it might be back up and the fellow tells me they got rid of it.  NO WARNING, NO CHANCE TO PRINT OUT INFO NOTHING,

In disbelief I told the fellow I had spent ungodly hours filling in that information.  He said, "To bad for you".  Then hung up.  I cancelled my subscription instantly.  Every since when they call or send a renew offer I throw it in the garbage and say, "To bad for you."

If you get this off the ground and it looks looks it is going to fail (Don't take that personal I have been in business for 40 years not everything works) PLEASE tell people so they can save their efforts.  James

    @VKurtB @samclemen3991

Great advice, and very valid points. That is a clear concern for us as well not only from a business perspective but from the perspective of someone who actually cares about our users. We have developed an exporting option already which will allow you to download all items in inventory to a spreadsheet in the event you would like to leave our platform, or if something happens to us. Right now we are focused on making a business that can be sustainable, but that requires users and more importantly paying users.

The exporting feature will go live in our next batch of updates. We will continue to create these features based on what you as a user are interested in.

We have enough cash to continue operations for the foreseeable future. As for our team, we are young and trying to learn as we go! You bring up a great point about succession. Barring any unexpected major event or tragedy, I am committed to providing notice to users and would make attempts to secure user data should the business and website fail.

    Thank you for your concern.

I like your idea. Are you anticipating a program that will reside on the customer’s computer or is it a cloud based/server service? What are your plans for keeping up with technology as it evolves? Do you have the staff and expertise for that?

you asked MorganMan about the features he likes with coinmanage. They are continually adding the coins to their database that are easily added into the collector’s sets and inventory. It is also very easy to navigate. They do have a few issues, however. One is dealing with a record that has been corrupted. I am also not crazy about their reports, but that may have been improved in recent years. Their customer service is almost non-existent. MorganMan may or may not have an opposing opinion.

Thank you for your comment and questions!

    1. The program is currently cloud based. I think that this makes the most sense in terms of keeping up with the "trends of technology". However I could see a downside in terms of not being able to edit offline. Can I ask, which would you prefer?

    2. We have a small founding team, but definitely plan to grow as our userbase and funding increases. I do not handle the development but my co-founder has proven himself capable. We want to add more developers as soon as possible. Part of the reason I have done discovery in places like this is to research what collectors really want as well as excite everyone for what's to come. There's a lot of development happening in the industry (I am aware of a number of coin startup projects that have not gotten much attention), and we plan to be on the cutting edge.

    3. I appreciate your input on coinmanage. I have not used their platform but it's good to know that it is easy to navigate. From what I can tell, it looks fairly outdated. I hope this is something we can improve on. Reports are interesting, we have some plans to implement custom reporting in our platform down the line. As far as customer service goes, we make this a priority even with our limited people resources. You can always reach out to me here, via email as listed on our site, or on social media. We have already taken feedback and implemented changes from many early users.

I really appreciate you taking the time to ask some questions. I hope that we can build something that you will enjoy using in the future.

For me, the biggest gap in what dealers offer their buyers is timely updated inventory.  If anyone could ever make it economically feasible to dealers at scale, it would certainly have potential value to me as a collector of coinage which is difficult to find.

Aside from eBay, there are other aggregator sites like VCoins and MA Shops but it's limited.  I presume more dealers don't participate because the value proposition isn't there for them.  Don't know how it does or may differ from your effort.

It does seem like the industry is highly fragmented! This has given me some ideas in terms of features that we could implement to allow for easier transactions for dealers, which would then flow to collectors in terms of better offerings and lower prices.

We have a pretty busy road map right now but in the coming months I think we could implement some helpful integrations. Thank you very much!

Excel has the ability grab stock values up-to-the-second if you program it to grab them.

Can it do the same with coin auction sites ?  An ability to program it to grabe the last 10 sales and maybe throw out the lowest and highest would be super-useful.

By stock values do you mean inventory levels from different sales channels (like eBay, online stores, etc.)? Or the market prices?

We have a lot of requests to add auction records and pricing. I think that is an interesting path we could take! It could certainly be done but would require some partnerships we do not currently have.

    No.

NGC is lightyears ahead of your effort.  Just the color schemes alone that your BETA is employing is a semi-turnoff.

Then too, with your site, users would be putting sensitive information under the purview and auspices of… "who knows what?"

Basically, you're an unknown quantity trying to compete against a website that is fully developed, prides itself in further-perfection-enhancements, and all the while is making a profit from its sustainable business practice.

    Sorry, but "them's the facts."

Hey, I respect the honesty! I encourage you to stay updated with our progress. We are early in development and already getting great feedback from users.

If you have any constructive feedback in terms of what would actually make this platform useful for you, or what you would like built to help handle your collecting needs, we would love to hear it.

I also don't collect any US coins, if your product is built around that.

Also, if you eventually intend to market it for a fee, the landing page seems to indicate it's more for coin dealers versus collectors.

I don't see much of a market from collectors, unless it's free and you intend to generate revenue from advertising.

We are adding the ability to add custom sets in the next batch of updates (coming in a week or two). You are already able to add anything to the inventory table view, but the sets will only work for US coins at the moment. Give us a week or two to get that updated!

We are definitely focused more on dealers from a business model perspective, but I wanted to create something for collectors as well. There will be optional features that collectors or dealers can pay for, but I anticipate a free plan will be available for some time.

Honestly, no I cannot think of any feature or reason that I would need or want to cause me to switch from what I currently use.   It is less about the tech or learning a new system but simply because I'm not young anymore and I have and will continue to collect less and less in the coming years.   Some folks just like to try the new hotness or be on the edge of technology, I'm not one of those people; I'm in the "if it isn't broke don't fix it" crowd.

Nothing wrong with that! Thank you for your honest and respectful input.

@RaritiesValue.com I have followed your post on the PCGS forum.   You have a nice well thought out program/product, for myself I use the NGC registry software and my trusty Excel spreadsheet.   These have served me well in managing and tracking my coin collection, I do not see myself altering that at the current time.  I do think your program will be of great value, particularly to new collectors that do not have an established system.

@Coinbuf I appreciate that! We are working hard to hopefully build something great for collectors like yourself to eventually use!

I understand the pain and time cost of switch over as well as the inconvenience of learning a new system. Can you think of anything that would make you or collectors like you be motivated to switch?

I'm using Coin Elite. It works really well keeping track of everything. The file sorting and report functions are really good.

Nice! I have heard that software being used by a few people. Is there anything you would like that they changed about it to make it better or easier to use?
