  1. Double-Die is deleterious for me. LOL, yeah, I had to look up the word before I chose to use it. I can’t determine what is legit and what is ghost-like die erosion doubling, shelf-like strike or die doubling, microscope/scanner trickery, etc., etc., etc…. I have a few rolls of 60’s JFK’s and the bookmarked website for NGC Variety Plus coins, which for me is an extremely dangerous combination! I found some examples that have DD effect and I would like to verify what is what. I will try to focus on anomalies that I think are of note, but if I miss anything, please let me know. I have an idea that only a couple of my examples will be legit regarding doubling. I also have a funny feeling that a couple of things I did not point out may be something of note. Any info would be fantastic and appreciated! Thanks in advance! B: 1965: Obverse: I see nothing of note, except creepy yellow goo. Reverse: “UNITED” has doubling to the east, “STATES” has doubling to the west, “HALF” to the west, and “DOLL” to the west and “AR” to the east. Not all lettering and no consistent pattern, Double vision may not just be a song.

Reverse: “DOLLAR” has what I see to be doubling strongest on D-O-L-L-A, a few other letters look suspicious, but I will refrain from diving down the rabbit-hole just yet.
  3. EagleRJO, thanks for the info! I was hoping I had it, this is a odd one. I love this site!
  4. Yeah, sorry, my sarcasm gets the best of me sometimes. I expect limited value in what I find primarily due to the condition of the coins. My father has been acquiring/collecting coins all his life (80+years). He has never been a serious collector, only minimal purchasing through the mint and other second-hand collectors. He basically hoards coins of less-than collector level quality and never sorts them. I collect sports cards and stamps and have decided to help him organize, collate and inspect for varieties/errors, etc... I have been crash-coursing through as I go and wow it hurts a bit! Since he is not as familiar with the lesser known varieties, it's fun to show him stuff he isn't aware of. I love this site as a resource and all who help out for those of us less knowledgeable.
  5. LOL, sounds super rare! At least my batting average increased... slightly. . .
  6. Sandon, thanks for the info. I figured the mint mark was too flat to provide any indication of what it should/would have looked like 80 years ago.
  7. Yeah, this one was weird. I understood the reference information to be that the first mint mark was obliterated and a new one was put in the correct spot. The remnants referred to in the reference is a little dot right up against the torch, similar to my coin. I could not find any additional info online. No clue from me just a shot in the dark. . . I guess the target is sneaking away from me. . .
  8. Wow, I didn't realize the specificity of the placement of the mint mark. I ran across a few that were nearly touching the axe. I am just happy with seeing what I think I see and it turning out to be close to accurate. thanks Sandon, I really appreciate the help!
  9. Thanks for the verification Sandon. At this point, I am just trying to train my eyes and get my bearings straight with any and every anomaly that I notice. The coins I am going through are in relatively poor collector condition which makes it tougher to see many of the finer details.
  10. Hi All, found two Mercury dimes of interest. The second is a 1943-S which looks to be a: 1943 S Trumpet S. I am afraid, though, that this coin may be worn to the degree that the "trumpet" feature is misleading. I hope the more experienced crowd sees the same thing I do! Thanks in advance! NCG Varieties Plus: 1943 S TRUMPET S 10C MS Diagnostics: This style of mintmark has a flared serif at bottom which resembles the bell of a trumpet.
  11. Hi All, found two Mercury dimes of interest. The first is a 1940-D which looks to be a: 1940-D/D VP-003. I hope the more experienced crowd sees the same thing I do! Thanks in advance! NCG Varieties Plus: 1940 D/D VP-003 10C MS NGC Attribution: VP-003 Cross Reference: CONECA: RPM-001
  12. Hello All, I ran thru some Roseys and found a couple of hopefuls. This coin has some kind of line from the bottom of the torch through the D in Dime and to the rim. It is not likely to be anything special, but just trying to get a handle on finding any anomalies. I will be posting more coins individually. Thanks in advance.
  13. Hello All, I ran thru some Roseys and found a couple of hopefuls. This may be a stretch on my part, but I see a small bump right up against the lower part of the torch just below the bottom bands. I would like to get more experienced opinions on whether this coin would be considered a (1964 D/D Blunt 9 FS-502 10c MS). I will be posting more coins individually. Thanks in advance. Found in: Varieties Plus: 1964 D/D BLUNT 9 FS-502 10C MS NGC Attribution: FS-502 Cross Reference: CONECA: RPM-006 / Fivaz-Stanton (OLD): FS-018.7 / VarietyPlus: VP-004
  14. Hello All, I ran thru some Roseys and found a couple of hopefuls. Here is a second possible "Pointed 9". I would to get more experienced opinions on whether this coin would be considered a "Pointed 9". I will be posting more coins individually. Thanks in advance. Found in: Varieties Plus: 1964 D POINTED 9 10C MS Cross Reference: CONECA: ODV-012

  16. Sandon, thanks again for the information. This forum is a much appreciated great wealth of knowledge
  17. Sandon, thanks for the information. After seeing my scans and noticing 4 of 8 having a doubling effect, I assumed that it wasn't legit. I am glad to know that finally I found something unique. How about the (pic3 - 1935p - "F" stamped on coin...), Is there and interesting factoids about that?
  18. I found a few Buffalo nickels with interesting features. Any assistance with clarification would be greatly appreciated. Verifying Double-Die is a pain for me to determine whether a coin has actual DD, just general wear and tear, or just a trick of the tools I use to magnify the coin. If I miss anything, please let me know. pic1 - 1934p - looks like doubling on "five cents" and some kind of a cud piece below the "V" pic2 - 1935p - looks like doubling on the bottom of "35" pic3 - 1935p - "F" stamped on coin, this is just a curiosity, I collect stamps and it reminds me of a perfin stamp. pic4 - 1936p - looks like doubling on "five cents" pic5 - 1936s - looks like doubling on "five cents" and more importantly, the "S" mint mart looks doubled. pic6 - 1937d - looks like doubling on "Liberty" pic7 - 1937p - looks like doubling on "five cents" and mint mark. pic8 - 1938d - looks like doubling on "five cents" and mint mark. pic9 - 1938s - looks like some kind of cud pieces on "trust" Thanks in advance for any knowledge drops!
  19. Hi, I have been helping my father collate his coin collection. As I ran through the 1983-1996 pennies, I found a vein of coins that seem to have similar "anomalies" with varying degrees of clarity. I am generally skeptical of my detection skills with errors, but these anomalies stood to me so i scanned a few. I have a few different toys to confuse me: cheesy digital microscope, 30/45/60/90x loupes and I scanned the image at 4800dpi and rendered a 9mb file, shrunk down to 2mb, I hope everything is still visible. I would like to know what to make of this coin, every aspect seems to have possibility. Unfortunately, I am like a kid in a candy store, I see all kinds of stuff so I need help reigning in my ambition. Obverse: Date & MM. . what is the silver outlining the date and mint mark and why does it seem so dramatically wide? LIBERTY. . what are the silver lines to the immediate left of each letter? Immediately above the crown of Lincoln's head is an outline, is that doubling? IGWT. . what is the ridgeline just above the letters that span I through T. Reverse: USA. . Above almost every letter, there is metallic/silver line that seems to me to have a doubling effect. The building is virtually encased in the same metallic/silver lining. E-Pluribus has a doubling effect. "One Cent" also has the silver lining. I have searched over 5,000 pennies and have not seen these anomolies. . . LOL 5K is probably a small number for most on this site. I hope I got more than just funky outlines, but any help with understanding will be greatly appreciated. If I missed something on the coin, please point it out. I hope I have described the coin well enough to understand what I am looking for. Thanks in advance.
