  1. I have an 1855 Large Cent that seems to have excessive wear on the date. It looks odd because the other features close to the date do not appear to exhibit nearly as much wear as the date. Is this just normal wear or was there an issue with the die that caused a weak strike? Thanks!!
  2. I have a full date set of Morgan Silver Dollars (multiple coins for some dates) which includes a complete set of Carson City coins. If I am going to trade or sell this collection, would I be likely to be able to move it as a whole (preferred) or should I anticipate needing to sell the coins individually? Thanks for any and all advice. Cal in Texas
  3. 4. Yes, I do. Are these holders considered safe? The coins are stored in a cardboard box made for slabbed coins and are kept in a dark and dry cabinet.
  5. I filled the final hole in my Carson City Morgan Dollar set today - 1889!
  6. 'Bugs Bunny' is a variety caused by a die clash between the obverse and reverse dies. The impact caused a marking outside of Franklin's mouth which resembles buck teeth - hence the 'Bugs Bunny' designation.
  7. What is the purpose / meaning of a PCGS 'PREMIER' label? I have noted it being used on some bullion coins for the past few years, but I do not know the significance of the label for my 1955 Franklin half dollar. Any ideas?
  8. The first coin in my collection was an 1881 Carson City Morgan Silver Dollar. It was given to me when I was 10 years old (1967) by my grandfather after I completed reading a book about Wyatt Earp and the OK Corral gunfight. My grandpa gave it to me because it was minted in the same year in which the gunfight took place in Tombstone. By some miracle I held on to it and in about 1980 when I began to collect coins it became the flagship of my collection. I have since had it graded by PCGS and they graded it as MS-63. I am very proud of the coin - it's sentimental value for me is far greater than it's monetary value.
  9. Might be one of a series - the 'Reverse' depicts a sailing vessel, certainly nothing to do with the Titanic.
  10. Thanks, RWB. Do you know if there has been a mapping of VAM varieties to mints?
  11. Is there a direct correlation between Morgan Silver Dollar VAM varieties and mint, or were there circumstances where a particular VAM variety might have occurred at different mints? Thanks All! Cal in Texas
  12. One more post in this thread - thanks for your patience! Below is my second coin of the same grade - I obtained these coins at the same time. This one has some toning - it is from the 'Teich Family Collection' and I understand those coins developed some degree of toning due to the way they were stored for 50 years. A question for RWB, or anyone else - from these rather poor photographs, can you discern anything of note regarding the die or the strike? Thanks!!
  13. Thank you, Roger. This kind of information fascinates me. I will definitely pick up a copy of the book.
  14. I hope this is not a stupid question but here goes - I have a 1942 Mercury Dime that is graded PR67 by PCGS and also has a CAC sticker. It very clearly has full bands on the reverse, but there its no FB designation in the grading. Is a proof graded coin automatically assumed to have full bands? Please see pictures below. Thank you for all guidance!
  15. I have noticed there are coins of all different grades and values which have been professionally graded by one of the grading services. What factors should go into the decision to get a coin professionally graded?
  16. Excellent information. Thanks very much! I am on my way to Rick's website.
  17. I hope I am not embarrassing myself, but I continue to see many references to coin varieties. For instance, I have been reading about Indian Head cents and I see reference to Snow varieties, Poliquin varieties, etc. and I was wondering if there is a reference database (on-line or in print) which defines and describes these varieties. Thanks for any and all guidance. Cal in Texas
  18. The coin is in a plastic holder but it is not a GSA holder to my knowledge. I am hoping these holders are safe. See picture below.
  19. Thank you for the reply and the very interesting information which could very possibly explain this anomaly. So this anomaly may well be the random result of a weak strike rather than die damage which I assume would produce many coins with the same defect?
  20. I am so excited to have found this forum and to be able to tap into the knowledge and experience of the members here. My next newbie question is around grading. I have a 1798 Draped Bust Large Cent for which I have been trying to estimate a grade based on information in 'The Official American Numismatic Grading Standards for United States Coins'. By my very inexperienced eye I am seeing characteristics of this coin which span several grades. Here's my question - when a coin exhibits described characteristics that span multiple grade descriptions, how does one decide on the best grading estimate? Also, I would be happy to get any opinions as to the actual grade of this coin. Thanks to all!!
