  1. Frankly, I liked your '33 double eagle better. [How does it feel to own the second finest known example?] I don't know if this Forum is a factory for refining skills or what. What is it about this coin that would make you question the judgment of professionals at a major auction? Where is the Certificate of Authenticity that accompanied this acquisition? Why aren't you satisfied with that? Where did you get this from? From whom did you buy this? What representations were made to you----character, reputation----at POS to instill enough confidence in you to proceed with this purchase?
  2. As JB would say, it's too early in the morning for this. It sure ain' Philly. 😉
  3. Special member greeting: 🐓: I told you he'd be back! Pigeons always come back! Q.A.: LOVELY INDIAN! WELCOME BACK!
  4. Really NGC Chat Boards? For some time now, as regular lurkers well know, I have been publicly lamenting the fact that my notifications have been disengaged. Did I really believe that? 🤔 How could I prove it? I couldn't. COMES NOW QUINTUS ARRIUS, following unremarkable prompts: Sign in!... which I proceed to do when, suddenly, in a spasm that can only occur in a time warp, I am confronted with the above "notification" which elicits a series of unsettling thoughts... But wait, wasn't I on the Forum only an hour ago? Thanks, NGC. You've only confirmed my basest suspicions. Thanks a lot!
  5. There is a simple explanation for that----there weren't any... at least not by Henning. My error, my apologies to you, @Hoghead515 and@The Neophyte NumismatistThe year "1953" stuck in my mind, but Hog's post refreshed my [skewed] recollection. Apparently, Henning produced "several hundred thousand and perhaps as many as a half million coins (dimes, quarters and half dollars)----bearing dates 1939, 1944, 1946, 1947 and 1953." So detailed was the account provided by the author of "The Strange Story of the Henning Counterfeit Nickels," (2020) that he ended it with the advisory: "Note: All my coins are in a safe deposit box. I keep nothing in my home." I apologize for the confusion.
  6. @Hoghead515: I believe those were dated 1954. The next one I get in change, I'll be sure to forward to you. .
  7. [Curious to know if this in any way explains the emergence of 7- and 8-tailed eagles in the debut year and if not, what the official explanation was.] 🤔
  8. Congenital defect of some sort. They never caught the guy who stole the steps, but the humongous MM is listed as missing. Counterfeit? I dunno. Where's @Lem E?
  9. @centinel: Afraid I don't know much about CACkling, but surely there must be a space-age app for that.
  10. Has Q.A., in his infinite wisdom, ever rejected a post for being Off-Topic? Re Mel Fisher. One could argue the gentleman your father met was Mel Fisher, before he became "MEL FISHER" of Atocha fame. It could have went either way. The Ship of Gold guy, Thompson has been sitting in jail now for over six years for refusing to tell those who invested in his S.S. CENTRAL AMERICA misadventure where their share of the treasure is. Your parents wouldn't've been tooling around the Sunshine State if they weren't prudent in their approach to investing. It could have went either way.
  11. Two from Frisco. Same date. Couldn't help yourself. I understand.
  12. I am wholly unqualified to weigh in on this series.
  13. MS-63 is my all-time favorite grade. (I have no CAC coins.) Incidentally, the sound you heard was a stress fracture in the internet. We do not get to see such treasures very often.
  14. @FlyingAl: As it would be poor form to delve into financial considerations, allow me to congratulate you on your fine acquisitions. While I have only a general knowledge of the series, recent prices realized at auctions seem to suggest you, or yours, will get a handsome return on your investments. Thank you for sharing these fine examples with the membership!
  15. 🐓: But " .... The period after trust on the obverse is exceedingly strong..." Q.A.: I agree. How could a post with so much promise, be virtually eviscerated with a few strategic strikes? Alas, there is a lesson to be learned here...
  16. ... perhaps he shall shed some light on his collecting proclivities...
  17. This is an interesting tidbit. Consider the 1909-S-VDB Lincoln Head is considered rare with a mintage of 484,000. For many, many years, its value remained stagnant. It turned out that quite a few pieces, in [then] "Uncirculated" condition, were set aside as novelties by collector and non-collector alike. It was the first year of what has turned out to be a 113-year old series, and counting. Scarcity is but one factor to consider in determining a token's or coin's worth. A good example of the vagaries of value and mintage in fickle markets.
  18. @Oldhoopster: You may be right, but to quote a famous broadcaster, Warner "let's go to the videotape" Wolf, herewith a scenario... Q.A.:: Where did you get this coin from, Ricky? 🐓 : (NO REPLY) Q.A.: Alright then, submit it! 🐓: Oops, the jig is up! I believe when confronted with hard-ball-playing experienced members, wielding unvarying, collective opinion, any collector, rather than submit, will stand down. You have been around and about long enough to know better than I would whether any poster ever flat-out contradicted the weight of the evidence and fooled the experts. I'll give you that.
  19. I have never seen any, much less know whether any exist, but what would such an embellishment on a coin translate into in terms of price or premium, percentage-wise? Go ahead, give it your best shot. I want to hear the internet break.
  20. 🐓: How come you couldn't do this, Q.A? Q.A.: Simple. Because I am not computer-savvy. Nice work, gentlemen!
  21. [There's that scrawny 8 in 1938 again... Great Buffalo Heads, @rrantique!]
  22. I believe it cruel to suggest anyone submit such coins, thereby compounding the "error" at great cost. I am going to do the unthinkable and seize upon something another member said and ask point-blank: WHERE DID YOU GET THESE FROM? (I would really like to know whether you found these or bought them, for how much, from whom and where, but we'll cross those bridges, if and when, we come to them.. The ball is back in your court. Relax, OH, the closing "expression" is directed to the OP!)
  23. IMHO... Hog is the real deal we seldom hear from. I don't know that he is concerned with superfluous "varieties" or "errors" besides those he may inadvertently come across. This is a nuts-and-bolts collector who has a laid-back style, enjoys what he's doing and marches to the beat of a different drum. Plenty of room to upgrade or specialize. Perfect.
