TON Collection reacted to kbbpll in Cracked planchet or post mint error?
I don't know how to classify these things but I think it was struck on a very defective planchet and then the whole left surface broke off. Pretty cool.

TON Collection reacted to Greenstang in Is this 1945 P wartime nickel struck on copper planchet?
Looks like Environmental Damage. You can still see the silver in places.

Doubling? No. Maybe a wee bit o' "spreading out". These hubs and dies were used HARD, unforgivably so.

TON Collection reacted to Greenstang in Is this a 1971 DDO?
    TON-
To help you understand the difference between yours a genuine DD, I placed the word LIBERTY together to give you a better understanding.
Note on the genuine DD on the top photo how the letters have thickened on the left side from the Doubling. This is not present on yours. Remember, to be a DD, it has to be exactly the same as the original. Photos are blurry but you should be able to see the difference.

Did you not show the 2002D earlier? Anyhow, it has been burned changing the copper to black. Probably with a cigarette lighter.
The 1968 has been environmentally toned, by what I 'm not sure.
Neither one had this happen during the striking of the coin so they can't be errors.

TON Collection reacted to Conder101 in What is this 1943S penny struck on?
I'd say zinc plated steel, and it looks like it has been reprocessed/replated, and they did a pretty good job of it.  The reason I say reprocessed is because the coin is moderately worn, enough that it would have worn through the plating on the high relief areas, but they show the same coloration as the low relief areas.  That makes me think a replating after the wear occurred.

TON Collection reacted to Greenstang in What is this 1943S penny struck on?
    Agree with Conder-
It has that replated look that I have seen on many 1943's that shows no sign of wear. Easy to check, just look at the edge and if it looks like the rest of the coin, it is replated. The edge should be steel as the blanks were punched out after the sheets were zinc coated.
It is not uncommon to have these coins reprocessed/replated in order to make them look like a higher grade for selling.(See Littlejohns)

"am a collector with 56years of experience, and frankly, Ihave never cared about errors orvarieties very much at all."
Anyone with 56 years of experience would never have that mind set. And age wise...I find it hard to believe you don't remember some of the most intriguing errors to come of light sense then? Real Game Changers on the value and interest levels...even if you don't like errors you couldn't of avoided this area of collecting and been a responsible dealer...
I'm in touch with the ANA as a Life Member and Donor, YN Sponsor. This is incorrect. Currently 4 are building sets and I know 2 volunteers that have dealt with Fred in California and purchase error coins to display/share and educate others....? Not to mention the other Great People in the error coin business who give their little free time they have and expenses they don't recover.
I noticed from other members comments what your rant is all about...just represent everything fairly please...and one more thing that is my only opinion here.....UNDERSTANDING WHAT CAUSES THE ERROR COINS IN THE COINING PROCESS IS THE MOST DIFFICULT AND REWARDING EXPERIENCE ONE CAN VENTURE INTO....
SOUNDS LIKE EGOS AND SHALLOW POCKETS DECIDED TO THROW THEIR ERROR 2 CENT PIECE IN...(PUN INTENDED)......OH YEAH, DID YOU KNOW 35% OF PEOPLE GET INTO COINS BECAUSE OF ERRORS....
56 YEARS...I WOULD SAY YEAH, NOT EVERY NEW COLLECTOR WANTS A 1955 OR AN 09-S....TIME TO MOVE ON FRIEND....

That's where you risk being DEADWRONG. I buy the new Red Book every year and now the Mega Red, too. It is still my #1 source in U.S. Coins.
That's where you go wrong. It was my #1 source till I was like 12 then Eric Newman taught me how to source coin information....

You know I don’t really weigh a whole lot of coins. But Eisenhower dollars are  One of the most difficult Coins the mint Has  ever minted.  So I basically put two and two together. And find myself Examining these coins More than anything else

TON Collection reacted to Just Bob in 1969 D kennedy with weird yellowish metal
It is an odd color, but then silver reacts with chemicals in the environment to form all kinds of colored toning. At least it isn't black.

TON Collection reacted to Greenstang in Such thing as a 1959 Proof DDO
Yes it is very possible for a Proof to have DDO. As all proofs are struck twice, it is not uncommon for them to have  DD. If you have a strong microscope and look at a Proof Coin, you can probably see some sort slight doubling on a lot of them.
  25. Thanks
TON Collection reacted to Just Bob in 1916 D penny looks either enviro damage? or is this something else?
You have it right. It is environmental damage.
