  1. Another newbie question,I have 35 coins in my Morgan set (on my competitve coin list)  , and if I choose category the "Morgan Complete Set 1878 to 1921", how many slots will I have ? I see a lot of request to add slots and I didn't know :( Also I'm under the impression PCGS coins can be in my set ?

    thanx,

Hello. Thank you for your interest in the NGC Registry!

You initially typed in PCGS cert number 36809352, which is a legitimate cert. number. As such, it was approved by our admin team. The coin was not deleted. It is still in your inventory, and we will delete it for you.

    ldhall    PCGS    36809352   Owned   $1 1892 CC

It is still in your inventory, and we will delete it for you.

Thank you for the help, I am sorry for confusion. As you can tell I'm new, but under my coins I don't see ldhall    PCGS    36809352   Owned   $1 1892 CC.  ??? Am I looking in wrong place - I see all my other coins ?

  3. Hello, I have started adding coins to registry and have the following questions :)

    ·      Is there a definition page for the different types of sets ?

    ·      Can your set be in both custom and competitive sets ?

    ·      Can coins be a part of 2 different set within custom or competitive categories ? (i.e. entire Morgan set and CC entire set).

    ·      Will coin price guide always reflect NGC price guide even if its PCGS coin?

++ I deleted an incorrect entry under “my competitive coins”  that I really don’t understand why it was approved since it was a typo error .  When I deleted it, I got a prompt saying it will be marked as sold in coin manager which confused me also. I hope this doesn’t confuse matters.

    Line 18: 1891CC  Morgan Silver Dollar PCGS 64 ; cert # 36809352 (incorrect coin)

    Line 19 : 1892CC  Morgan Silver Dollar PCGS XF45 ; cert # 36809352 (correct coin)

  4. LOL Thanx for all of the input. Yes as a Newbie, I get caught up in the holder LOL ;  I realize the coin eye appeal is the key but I'm at mercy of the camera :)  I think I will be patient and watch. If my grading eye was better, I could eliminate the slab doing my work for me LOL Thanx again for advice and conversation.

  5. Hello fellow collectors, I know this is another Newbie question and I remember all the helpful advice about prices, grading fees, and patience LOL :) But I'm in a dilemma - I am 3 coins from a 30 coin commemorative set and I've search HA, GC, Ebay, Collector's Universe and the grading companies chat boards for quite a while, but can't find year, mint mark and grade needed. I've found 2 of the 3 but in ANACS slabs (all other coins are NGC/PCGS). Considering the market when I find coins - I'm tempted to settle for ANACS slabs - thoughts  ???

  6. Hello, I figured I need to ask the experts after not getting consistent and understandable explanations from unknowledgeable customer service agents from both grading companies and a national dealer LOL.

Question: I have 4 ASE coins (2021 T-2 and 2022) all graded 69 and 70. They all look the same (with AW inscription) on the obverse and no mint mark on back. 2 are labeled West Point and 2 with nothing listed on label. I was first told the AW was for West Point LOL. Then I was told unless its say Philadelphia (emergency production) or San Fransisco then its West Point. What's the real answer LOL :)

PS: 2 I purchased and had graded and 2 were purchased already slabbed !

  7. Thanx for all of the input. I also only have good things to say about NorthEast concerning purchases :) Also thank you for the reminder that GC doesn't have seller fees over 1K :) I figured NorthEast would give me a dealer price because when  I asked for a quote about a year ago, and it was around 30% book;  but when I called today , I was told to send coins (at their expense) and they will give me a quote which I was not comfortable with :( I know they are reputable but why waste shipping cost ? Thanx again - I will stick with GC for selling and occasionally ebay LOL

Is your primary focus the pricing differential between NGC and PCGS....or whether either or both are up-to-speed with current market values ?  Those are separate issues.

I find the online pricing guide/chart useful for the TREND going back months or years....but not for the recent past or current market value.  For that, I go to recent auctions at HA or GC.

Those are recent...real-time...and reflect true market outcomes often with multiple bidders on multiple items of the same grade.

I was really wondering why same coin and grade had a large difference in price between the 2 grading companies. I agree GC and even even ebay gives better market trends. I also noticed people were pricing much lower than price guide. I inquired and was told it was based on population (which I didn't fully understand) and they used 1 grading company price as opposed to the company that graded the coin because its more realistic to maarket. This tells my "newbie" mind that people perceive one company different than the other due to popularity LOL

PS: I am familiar with GC but I just started looking at HA which I assume is Heritage Auctions. Thanx :)

  9. Hello fellow collectors :) I was wondering how often NGC updates the online price guide. It seems to me that I remember a "last updated date" when you go to a specific coin type which I no longer see. I previously asked the forum about a large variance of price (approx 200 dollars) between the top 2 grading companies in  same grade of same coin which I didn't understand. Thanx for any input :)

There is still a prevalent thought that coins in older holders say the OGH (old green label holder), rattlers, dollies, for the PCGS brand, and the old soap bar NGC holders that were in use before they added in the line about 1/3 down on the slab; that these coins were graded under more tight or stringent grading.   That same analogy also applies to the early photocert and small holders of ANACS and to some now defunct companies like Hallmark and very early PCI.   Those who embrace that line of thinking have now begun to include the slabs from both companies in the generations that came just after those holders with the full insert holder, prior to the current prong style.   There is little evidence to support the notion that the newly included generations are actually undegraded, however given the rampant gradeflation there are going to be some coins that will upgrade from time to time.

The problem is that most of these is hype, why is it hype you ask, well it is a long but simple explanation.   Most of the stuff that you see floating around the bourse circuit or on venues like ebay still in old style holders have been picked over and these are the rejects.   Coins that are not likely to upgrade or because the cost to try for an upgrade is more than the coin would be worth in the next grade up.   A prime example are common date Morgan dollars like an 1881-S, there is a very minimal value spread from MS62 to MS64, so dealers do not feel that it is economical to spend $50 to get an MS63 into an MS64 holder when the MS64 only sells for $35 more than the MS63.   And they are right, better to call the coin undegraded and sell it for a premium MS63 price than spend the money to try for the next grade.  So that is the long answer, the short answer is yes, the grading companies have gone through periods of time where the grading has shifted due to varying factors like employee changes and management changes throughout their history.   And yes, there is a belief that those coins can be identified by some generations of holders

The only way to find really premium coins in these old holders is when an old time collection that has been off the market for decades suddenly appears and is sold, that is when you see the opportunity to really find true fresh undegraded coins in older holders.   The problem is that as a collector you or I may have a very limited opportunity to see such collections before they are picked clean.   Brick and mortar dealers see these opportunities on occasion and when they do, they use that opportunity to pick those coins that they feel are undegraded and have those coins regraded and placed into new holders.    I was very fortunate to have that opportunity at the end of last year when a fellow inherited some great coins in older types of holders and came here to inquire about the best way to sell those.  It turned out that he lived only a couple of miles away from me and I met with him to review the collection and discuss some strategies for selling.   That was a real treat for me to see all those coins that had been held for thirty years +, that was a first and could well be the only time I'll be able to have that unique opportunity.

Sorry for the long post but this subject is somewhat simple but with many minor nuances.

  11. Hello Forum, hope all is well with everyone :) I have a newbie question: I see the different Generation slabs used by TPG's. I also realize perceived or actual grading trends. I was wondering if the slab generation has a correlation with grading tend ices of that time ? I'm thinking did they grade harder in past or present therefore a possible difference in 2 like coins but graded at different times. Please don't laugh me off with a dumb question :)

  12. Thanx for feedback, I am just learning the registry and really didn't understand the different categories (where can I read about the categories?). Any feedback is helpful. I actually stopped adding coins because I didn't know if I was on right track. Thanx again - I will add the rest soon.
