  1. You chose a challenging type of coin to obtain in problem-free condition. I’d advise patience and caution. I’d stay away from the two linked coins, due to the issues that you mentioned. Many copper coins have been recolored, a number of them, deceivingly so. The surfaces of the 1804 Half Cent posted by Coinbuf look uncommonly wholesome.
  2. You're most welcome. If you mean at the rim on the far right, that area is a negative/detraction.
  3. Welcome to the forum. Your 1821 (not 1921 😉) dime looks like an easy AU to me.
  4. I’m speaking just for myself here - I don’t think anything about shows for next year is definitive. How could it be at this point?
  5. Please correct the below thread title of yours. The title to the book reads “Saint-Gaudens..” Roger Burdette's Saint Gaudens Double Eagles Book And the one below, too. It doesn’t include a denomination, so it’s unclear what coin you’re asking about. 1798 Draped Bust -- legit value ?
  6. Listen to yourself - all you thought was to drop the word “Augustus”. It’s not YOUR thread (title).
  7. If you want to take issue with thread titles, there are plenty of better candidates than this one. As is, it lets people know quite well, what they need to. Just because someone doesn't like it, isn't a valid reason to have it changed.
  8. I agree about the planchet issue. I thought there might also be some signs of a rusted die, based on portions of the obverse portrait and some of the obverse lettering. It might just be the images, though.
  9. Jason, do you think it might be a rusted die too?
  10. I don’t think the holder matters, either way. But the crack in it would drive me crazy.
  11. Thank you. I asked, because my thought is that in most cases, even collectors who assemble amazing collections, aren’t necessarily especially influential. That doesn’t mean they’re not greatly respected, appreciated or admired. Just that, their collections might not influence others on a widespread basis.
  12. In what way(s) do you feel each of those individuals was so influential?
  13. I believe that “proof-like” generally applies to reflectivity from a distance of approximately two to four inches. However, a proof-like coin isn’t produced the same way that a Proof coin is.
  14. I'd call it a Proof. But either way, it's a no win situation, when making such a call. And I'm well aware of the potential slippery slope, when labeling coins "Specimen" or "Proof" when there's no official record of their production.
  15. I never said I didn’t care. And for the record, I do. That said, as a grader, what call would you make if you saw a coin which looked as obviously Proof as any Proof you’d seen, but for which there was no official record of Proofs having been struck?
  16. Regardless of who reports whom, I’d be very surprised if there is heavy handed moderation. Granted, you and I almost certainly have different views on what that means.
  17. I’ve participated here, off and on, since 2002. I don’t recall having seen any heavy handed moderation during any of that time and don’t anticipate any going forward, either. So man up and fear not.😉
  18. Agreed, about more interesting conversations with those who see things differently. As a matter of fact, while you and I have recently disagreed on more than one subject, I enjoy reading your posts and find them to be interesting. As to Tom Hulce and Amadeus, I’d rather BE Hercules and talk to my hair dresser.😉
  19. Please check your first sentence, above. There must have been a typo or other type of error.😉 I don’t claim to have any understanding of whether the former would mean there were unauthorized strikings. But, just to give you something to disagree with, I wouldn’t take it as a given that such strikings would be illegal or improper at the time.
  20. One thing I’d like to know is whether any 1964 coins, other than the ones from the Stack’s sales, have been attributed as “SMS”. If not, I’d be more inclined to believe that the coins were special strikes. But if so, I’d be more likely to think Roger is correct about their (mere) early strike status.
  21. In general, I don’t think they’re less compelling. But as I mentioned, they’re a lot less valuable (so less likely to receive similar attention). If you really care about seeing pictures, they shouldn’t be difficult to find.
  22. First, you said that you “believe nothing“. I’m unaware of anyone on the planet who believes nothing. And in posting “why use it at all? Unless, of course, one has a desire to become a member of the thought police”, you gave me and at least one other person the impression that you believe that using the report function indicates that the person doing so has the desire you mentioned. Second, at the bottom of this post, I have copied what Dena wrote. if, based on that, you have haven’t seen posts that were “clearly out of bounds“, then either you and I don’t tend to read very many of the same threads or we see things very differently. Third, what you describe as having “noticed” looks to me like what you “believe”. Last, my belief about what you implied was addressed in “First” above. It seems that some need a reminder of the guidelines accepted when creating an account here. Recently there has been an uptick in the number of unacceptable posts. As a result, there will be greater scrutiny of the material posted here. In summary, the following will not be tolerated: Political posts Mud Slinging Trolling Baiting Masking Inappropriate references (analogies, etc.) to significantly emotional topics such as Nazis, slavery, etc. Threads started explicitly to bash other members Hi-jacking of other people's threads in a way that stifles the originally intended topic Disrespect The disrespect exhibited in recent posts is overshadowing all the positive and valuable content being posted here and is creating a climate of hostility. It is particularly disappointing to see the way in which new members and collectors are being treated. Using words like ignorant and stupid is not the way to educate and welcome the well intentioned folks making an effort to embrace this community. It stops now.
  23. “Proof-like” implies reflective surfaces. The High Reliefs being discussed don’t display that characteristic.
  24. I’m not sure what you mean by “why is there only talk of the halves?”. Maybe they receive the bulk of the attention, because they bring much higher prices, but there are graded examples of each of the other denominations, as well. The coins were in sets that sold in Stack’s sales in the 90’s and when I was grading at NGC, a number of them were submitted for grading. As I recall, over time, many of the coins have migrated into PCGS holders.
