  1. Counterfeit. Stamp it with "COPY" or destroy it. Report the seller to the FBI and CBP. If you bought the fake from Colorado, contact the state Attorney General, also.
  2. RE: "...any chance this might be worth more than bullion?" Nope. Listen to Mark.
  3. Personally, the coin seems to be an Unc-68 at best. Too many small marks. If "70" is free of marks at 5x, then an Unc-69 should have only 2 or 3.
  4. Excellent material. Makes the other commemorative books look weak, superficial and petty.
  5. False. This implies systemic corruption, which is not the case. There have been dishonest individuals and most are sitting in a federal prison. Most modern error coins come from the private distribution centers where large bags are broken down into rolls for bank/business distribution via armored truck. The US Mint's rate of released errors is extremely low, but not zero. Thus, when billions of coins are made each year, there will be several thousand error coins in the large bags. PS: The quote is from Kurt Bell
  6. The NARA on-line info is almost useless -- it does not, and never has, matched the actual finding aids, entry numbers or locations at any NARA location. When people walk into NARA in College Park with this list, the staff have to start from the beginning and ask questions so they can get the correct documents. Yes, NARA has been advised of this many times.
  7. Post photos and let the members help you decide if any of the coins justify independent authentication. To blindly "send them in" is wasting hundreds of dollars on coin likely worth a few cents.
  8. No, it's still dead; it merely is in Florida where the primary growth industry is "Undertaking and Cremation Services."
  9. Ahhhh...so they taste like chicken -- same as alligators.
  10. Then write to Whitman Publishing LLC and let them know abut the error. That is the easiest way to have it corrected. PS: It was the Commission of Fine Arts that got action on the 1921 Peace dollar - not ANA. The ANA's work died in Congress. Details in RAC 1916-1921.
  11. There are three or four 1922 HR/Reverse of 1921 coin known - survivors of the failed trial press run from early 1922. Also known are sandblast proofs of the 1922 HR/Reverse of 1922, and the 1922 Medium relief/ Reverse of 1922 in both toggle press, and medal press proofs. The Guide Book for Peace dollars has a general description of events. Details can be found in my earlier book Renaissance of American Coinage 1916-1921. The Red Book's introduction is a general, superficial section with omits critical details. That is typical for a general purpose reference. In the past 100 years approximately a dozen 1922 HR (all versions), and 1922 medium relief dollars have surfaced, including some from the heirs of mint director Ray Baker. There is also documentation mentioning some of these pieces. We know why and how they were produced. The chances of finding one are likely very, very small.
  12. These are usually the dregs that remain after original bags were searched - multiple times - and the nice coins removed. The coin might actually be Uncirculated but worth only slightly more than bullion.
  13. Bologna. Go to The Container Store, or on-line and buy something similar for a dollar or two retail.
  14. They left out too much information, resulting in a false and misleading listing. R.W.Julian discovered and published the information 50 years ago. If that's an older edition, it might have been corrected.
  15. NOTE: "SMS or Special Mint Set" is reserved only for 1965-1967 sets issued by the US Mint and designated as such by them. Use for other things will spread confusion and encourage crooks to take advantage of others.
  16. Your English is fine! PS: It's "doubled die" not "Double DIY." - Pronounced the same, though. Try the book A Guide Book for Peace Dollars, Whitman Publishing LLC, (by me).
  17. The OP's coin is a normal, worn 1922 dollar. The Guide Book list is wrong. This is the quantity of 1922 HR/Reverse of '21 trial pieces made. All were routinely melted, with exception of a few that had been used for internal examination. All known 1922 HR/Reverse of 1922 coins are medal press proofs, either sandblast or satin. (There is no such thing a s "matte" Peace dollar.) PS: By "lane crossing N" I think the OP means "ray crossing N of ONE." That is not an identification point for 1922 HR dollars.
  18. Why? You gain nothing, lose much, and increase the chance of spotting and other surface contamination.
