Looks to me like someone was crudely, but unsuccessfully trying to make a hole in the middle. Maybe out of boredom or curiosity... just a guess ..

Definitely exactly what he did if you can, plus talk to professionals like you guys on this board. I’ve pridefully been burnt before though..

I would have to agree. Even looking at the modern fake wood encased ones, it looks even better. It’s hard to tell unless nowadays you definitely have provenance. Not to discourage, I’ve just had to be very careful with these kind for a while now....

I just went through my late grandma’s collection of these and I found many weight discrepancies, especially on the Denver Coins. But these techniques have helped me with these type issues.....

I have hundreds of examples of this & most are lamination errors, I also have die cracked coins & the difference is very obvious. Hope that helps....

It looks like to me to contain some lamination marks, but also a lot of it looks like damage especially when you compare the rim. I had one kind of the same way recently & it was caused at least the oddest parts by other cents striking either in a coin feeder or through circulation.... hope it helps a little.

I had some fake ones looked exactly like those & sent them to be graded. Luckily they spared me the cost of grading sent them back & I cut one in half & it is an extremely hard metal but the metal passes the axis test for silver some how. I can tell you that almost anything can be faked nowadays & these guys here really do know what they’re talking about.....
hope this helps
