    Yeah, it may just be the pictures, and my lack of experience with gold, but the surfaces do look unnatural to me.

    Pics never do a coin justice and I took different angles because of the reflection of the coin. It has a really nice reflective surface for a mint state ..... which I know, could mean someone polished it. That said, it does have good eye appeal. My local coin shop offered me 95% spot (cash) last week .... wonder if he will again now that gold is on a tear !

    Pictures of the whole coin @Terence:) otherwise its difficult to help you

    Sorry .... will do

    Considering sending in for grading but not if these would be a detriment to potential grade. I think the overall condition looks favorable to grade out high enough to sell for more than Melt value.

  3. Any thoughts on the tiny black spots (copper spot) gold can have? This coin has on the the obverse that is flat and one on the reverse that is pitted (haven't seen that before). Considering sending in for grading but not if these would be a detriment to potential grade. I think the overall condition looks favorable to grade out high enough to sell for more than Melt value.

  4. While it is possible to get some type of material in a capsule prior to them being closed I haven't experienced it with any of my proofs (silver & gold) that I have purchased over the years.You could carefully open the case, inspect and remove it.

    As for what you see in the second pic that looks to me like flow lines or a watery look (what I refer to this as). It is  not that common with proof coins (again, I have experience with silver and gold) but I have seen it now and again. I have read that it doesn't happen on cameo proofs but I would disagree .... I've seen this before.  I believe the same is for platinum cameo type coins.

    Greetings!.

    First post and I am returning to my passion of coins that I had when I was 5 until like 12 years old!  Ahhh what a rush!

    So I am basically a noob. Wanted to get a taste for platinum so I just received my Happiness 1oz plat proof form the US mint. I service circuit boards for a living so I happen to have a very nice Stereo microscope. While observing it under a 4x and 10x magnification I can see tiny yellow like specs of material resting on the surface of the coin on some spots. Is this normal? Should I send it it to have that stuff blown off and get it slabbed? I assume a the mint they have stuff flying around in the air and it landed on the coin during encapsulation. I can see the specs are clearly on the surface of the coin and not the outside capsule. thanks for any insight!

    Hey Chad .... I'm fairly new here as well but I believe a couple photos to be included would help.

    Here are the criteria for NGC to designate a Full Head:

    • three leaves in Liberty’s hair must be totally visible;
    • the hairline along Liberty’s brow must be complete;
    • the ear indentation must be evident.

    Trying to get a better pic (I really do need a better camera!)

    The lines are all there and I can see everything you noted

    ..... Very bottom of the 7A page it will have a full size version of a 7A coin - both sides ...

    Yes, I see it now. Same cracking all the way around, the doubling on date, the gouge and the tilt on the cc

    It's all there, Thank you!

    Now I have 6 more to analyze  (this is fun btw!)

  8. Yes I see it now .... had to get some different angled lighting on it. Looked like normal dings like a lot of Morgans have to me until you pointed it out. and I was looking a bit lower than here as well.

    Also, the die crack seems to go all the way around the entire coin through all the lettering not just within "states of"

    7A is a good bet - Cheek gouge and crack are some of the obvious looks along with the tilted CC.

    This looks a little later die state cause of the EXTRA character ( Cracks :-) )

    Though it states a rarity of 6

    Thanks for that look jgrinz. No cheek gouge but does have a 18 doubling. Attached the pics but can't get a good one of the 1 doubling just the 8 but it is there very prominent of the bottom of both.
