    Going To Finish Some Sets
Hello everyone. I hope you all had a great Christmas. I got some proof sets from family members, to add to my collection, so I was very happy.
In the coming year, I am looking to put a bow on some of the sets I haven't worked on in awhile. Here are my goals for 2017:
    1. Finish my Ike set.
    2. Finish my Washington quarter set (1932 - 1964)
    3. Finish my Presidential proof set, even though I hate that the mint started making reverse proofs at the end of the series.
    4. Once those are finished, work my Morgan Dollar set to 50% completion.
    5. Work my Peace Dollar set to 50% completion or higher.

What are your goals for the coming year?

    A little early...
As you know, I am trying to get some of my cousins' kids interested in coins. I sent my cousins Sonia and Claudia each a proof set, an album for holding 2x2s and Sacagawea folders, in addition to $5 worth of cent rolls.
I didn't wrap the cents and they tore through those trying to fill holes in the folders I got them this summer. Everything else was wrapped and they will open those Christmas Day. My cousin sent me video and pictures and they seemed legitimately excited. I also included extra 2x2s and I will send them random old coins periodically throughout the year.
Another cousin, I got her twin boys (11 months) a couple of mint medals each. My cousin David, I am giving his son a Morgan Dollar kn Christmas Day.
I'm having almost as much fun doing this as I am adding to my own collection. Almost... I just purchased a MS65 FBL Franklin for my Type Set.

    Happy Holidays and Happy Collecting.

    Found some great coins
Good morning, everyone. So as you know, I work at a bank and enjoy the amount of cash that I have access to. This week was particularly fun. On Tuesday, I had to open a box of nickels, so I opened the flaps and looked at the coins at the end of that roll. Nothing. I then flipped the box over, lifted it and started examining the coins on the other end of the rolls. Wouldn't you know it, I saw a big P staring at me. I don't remember the year, because the coin is downstairs, but I found a nice War Nickel.
Yesterday, I had to open a box of quarters. I didn't even have to flip the box over this time. I looked at the coins and I see one that looks old. I use my fingernail to pull back on the wrapper so I could see the date and 1935. I pulled it out and saw that it had an S mint mark. Not great condition, but around VG or so.

I hope you all find the coins that you're looking for. If I don't post on here again before the holidays are over, I wish you and your families peace, happiness and all the best.

    Reflection
As we work our way toward the end of 2016, the polls have closed so to speak, for the Registry Awards. Good luck to everyone with their competitive sets!
I look back at my collecting year and it has been a good one. I pushed my Morgan Dollar collection over 25% complete and am down to my last 3 coins in my Jefferson Proof collection. I have recently added a few coins to my Type Set and am enjoying buying coins for it that are outside what I am normally collecting.
I am working on getting some of my cousins' kids into collecting. One has taken a liking to his Lincoln coin folder. Under the suggestion of one of you, I plan to give him one of my ungraded Morgan dollars in addition to a number of rolls of Lincolns to search through.
Another cousin and her sister enjoyed the proof sets that I sent them, so I am sending them another proof set each in addition to Sacagawea folders. Both of their grandparents' families are Native American, so I plan to help them with their Sacagawea sets, in addition to getting them an example of a Buffalo nickel and Indian Head cent. I'll also add a letter explaining what I have gotten them, since I probably won't be able to call them on Christmas.
In addition to my gains, I also have to laugh at my missteps. When we moved in January, part of our packing was throwing random things into bags and boxes. A lot of those bags and boxes ended up in the garage for about 7 months. Recently as we were organizing the garage, I looked in a back pack that contained about 4 or 5 Jefferson Nickels that I have purchased since we moved, thus making them duplicates. What can you do, right? )

What some of your successes or laughable moments from the year 2016?

    Did I miss something?!
I was on Ebay shopping for Proof sets for my Goddaughter and her sister. Her sister was born in 2012 and proof sets are going for $100+ Did I miss something? Are the Presidential Dollars made with gold, or did these not sell in any sort of quantity from the mint in 2012?

    I'm puzzled....
Good evening. I have this bill sitting in my vault at work and it is puzzling me. The bill is not crisp from a pack, but is not in bad condition. It has a line where it appears the ink never hit. I thought it was a crease line, but in looking at it, I can't see at the top or bottom where a crease reaches the edge. Can anyone shed light on what I might be looking at here? Thank you.

    Almost Finished
I just added a few more coins to this collection, bringing me to five coins needed to complete this collection. It's one I have been working on for a couple of years and I will be happy to finally finish it.
I am looking to close out a few sets that I am almost finished with, so I can concentrate on my Morgan Dollars, Commemoratives and my Type Set.

    Happy collecting, everyone.

    Gifts for the young
I am SLOWLY getting caught up on numismatic gifts for my cousins' children. (Curses of having such a large family) My Goddaughter's birthday recently passed, so I ordered her something her mom said she was into (Some beads that you place on a board, then fuse together with an iron) and a 2007 Proof set from the year she was born.
Another cousin had her son last year, so I bought him a 2015 Proof set. He turns 1 next month, so I will be caught up with him.
My goal is to get them hooked on collecting and be the cool cousin who takes them to coin shows, loads them up on sugar and dumps them back on their parents. )

    Happy collecting, everyone.

    Is not quite big enough.....
When I was in middle and high school, back in the 90s, my Dad and I went all over Texas, visiting baseball card shows. I collected cards back then, but we really got into meeting Hall of Fame players and getting autographs. Yogi Berra, Brooks and Frank Robinson, Willie Mays, etc. When the strike happened in 1995, the shows dried up.
My Dad was working on an early 60s Al Kaline endorsed glove that we had gotten a bunch of signatures on. He has since given it to me and a couple of weeks ago, out of curiosity, I checked to see if there were any players signing in our area. Turns out, there was a huge show in Virginia last weekend. I took my Dad and we met Reggie Jackson and he signed the glove underneath Willie Mays.
It got me to thinking about Al Kaline and how cool it would be to get his autograph above his burned in signature on the glove. I found out that he will be signing in Atlantic City the first weekend of August along with about 25 other HOFers that we have not met.
Sadly, my budget does not allow me to get as many signatures as I would like. It also competes with my coin collecting budget. It is definitely a first world problem that can be easily solved by winning the lottery.
Such is life. I hope everyone has a great week of collecting!
P.S. I ended up with a couple of Morgans, a handful of Commemoratives and an obsolete note from the Whitman show last week.

Other things taking up my coin budget
Good evening, everyone. It's been awhile since I posted on here. I am surprising my wife with a Mediterranean cruise next year. I am telling her about it at Christmas, so wish me luck in not letting the secret slip.
Because of that, I have not purchased any coins in the last couple of months. But, I am breaking my hiatus to go to the Whitman show in Baltimore on Friday, since my vacation happened to fall the week of the show. Pure dumb luck.
    Happy collecting, everyone!

    Time to redesign our coinage
Hello everyone. I wanted to see if I could get your support for a change to our coinage. As President Roosevelt did in 1907, I think it is time to redesign our circulating coinage. The $10 bill is going to feature a woman in 2020, but it will share circulation with the Hamilton $10 bill.
In an effort to show progressiveness in both diversity and women's equality in America, I propose that the coins from the cent to the half dollar be redesigned back to the classic symbol of Lady Liberty, but with Liberty representative of the major ethnicities; Asian, Caucasian, African American, etc. (The dollar coin features Sacagawea, so that one can continue)
I created a petition and if it receives 100,000 signatures by May 15, it has to be addressed by the White House. I ask that you consider signing the petition by using the link below and sharing the link on your social media pages so that we can get the 100,000 signatures needed. Thank you.

    A good start.
We had a housewarming today, for the house my wife and I bought in January. My cousin David and his wife Angela were there with their two kids.
When the kids looked like they were getting bored, I pulled out the Lincoln coin folders I had gotten them. I wasn't exactly sure how to introduce it, so I asked, "Do you want to see something cool?" They thought it was cool when I pulled out the rolls of cents.
We layed down in the floor (something my back cursed me out for later), unrolled the coins and I started going over dates with them, showing them how to find the date in the folder and how to put them in their slot. I wasn't sure how to introduce mint marks, since they are in first grade and kindergarten, so I would look at the coin with them and say, "Do you see that mark?" That coin is from Denver and show them where to put it.
After awhile, they started finding duplicates, so I would ask them which one they thought looked better the one in their hand or the one in the folder. We popped a few out and upgraded them. Kailynn (Kindergarten) got bored with it after about 30 minutes (Not too bad), but David (1st Grade) stayed at it until his parents said it was time to go. We bagged up the coins he had not looked through for him. If he continues and fills this folder, I am going to get him a Wheat folder and take my jug of wheaties over for him to look through.
Who knows, maybe this gives him the bug.
    Happy collecting,

    Slow Week At The Bank
This week at the bank, I wasn't able to find much. I got four wheaties and nothing else. I did find out however that my Operations Specialist collects a bit also. When she went to audit a teller at a different branch, she found a $1 and $10 silver certificate in his mutilated money, because they were old. ) That was a nice find for her.
Yesterday, JPs Corner delivered 14 Lincoln 1959 - 1998 Harris Coin Folders. I have a huge family. That's just for my second cousins who are old enough to have an understanding of the concept of money and dates. There are about 5 more that I will work on in a few years.
I also found out tonight that a friend of mine in New York is a cub scout leader. I reached out to him to let him know that if he needed someone to talk to the kids about coins, I would love to help. (I think Boy Scouts still need a coin collecting merit badge)
Other than that, I bought a few 2016 coins to bring some of my sets back up to date. I anxiously await their arrival. Happy collecting, everyone.

    Through multiple channels.
I have had so much fun over the last few months talking to my coworkers about coins that I have decided that I would like to try to get more people interested.
I am going to put a daily Random Coin (Or currency) Fact on my Facebook page. Tonight, I talked about the 1943 copper cents and their value.
I am also going to get a Harris coin folder (Lincoln Cents) and a roll of cents for all of my cousins' kids. There are around 12 of them right now. I will also include a note about numismatics, why I enjoy the hobby so much and offer them any help if they choose. Hopefully the hobby will stick with one or two of them.

    The last few weeks
So, I've determined that the worst time is the time between ordering a coin and when it is delivered. I have a Washington Quarter and two obsolete bills somewhere between the seller and me. I ordered them yesterday, but the wait is awful.
I went out to a bookstore called Books A Million to pick up some magazines: Coins, Coin World and Coinage. (I really need to get a subscription) When I was checking out, the cashier told me that she had recently learned that someone who collects coins is a numismatist. I told her she was absolutely right and about how much I love the hobby. I also told her that the coin folders that they sell are a great way to get into Numismatics. Hopefully the bug bites her.
Lastly, my co-worker from Azerbaijan had a birthday last Sunday, so I bought him a proof set from 1988, the year he was born. My other co-worker has taken an interest in Star Notes. When I find them in the ATM deposits, I give them to him so he can keep them in his drawer until he's ready to buy them. I decided to get him a Silver Certificate Star Note for his collection. That came in today, so I am going to give that to him tomorrow. Hopefully these are the starts of great collections for both of them.
I hope ya'll are enjoying the hobby as much as I am right now.

    The F.U.N. convention!
I have been talking about going to the FUN convention fod a few years, but have never pulled the trigger on it. I have set a do or die goal of attending the FUN convention in 2017. I have created a separate account for svings for it. I would like to bring a decent amount of cash to be able to do some shopping while I am down there. However, my main focus will be attending the auctions, classes, seminars, etc.
In addition, I have two cousins who live in FL, so i will try to visit them as well.
    Happy collecting!

    It was a great week
Good evening, everyone. It's been awhile since I have been on here. We just purchased a house and we're ironing out a few kinks that we did not see before settlement. No biggie.
So, my co-worker from Azerbaijan is only one coin away from finishing the Philadelphia portion of his State Quarter collection. He is missing Ohio. He is about half way finished with the Denver Mint. He told me today that he is loving looking for these coins. The numsmatics is flowing through him.....
Tuesday, our armored car delivered our shipment and I need to break open the box of cents to give them out to the tellers. Whenever I open a box, I open the flap, then look at the coins that are facing me. Then, I carefully flip the box over and lift it, so that the coins are out of the box, standing up. I inspect the new end of the roll that is facing me, then I rubber band them in groups of 10 rolls. On Tuesday, I open the flap and I have the reverses of two wheat cents staring at me. I took two rolls out of my drawer and replaced them. I flipped the box over and lifted it and two more wheaties staring at me. I replaced those also. I finished up and then went back out to my drawer to open up the rolls and set the wheaties aside. I checked the rest of the rolls to see if there was anything else and I ended up with 14 wheat cents! The interesting thing is that there were a lot of other cents in the rolls from the 60s and 70s that would grade as red. I have never seen circulated rolls with red cents from those decades. I decided to take the rest of the box home with me. (Legally of course. I withdrew money from my account) I gave half to my co worker, because I guess I'm a nice guy.
I got home and started opening the rolls. I ended up with an additional 14 wheaties, a really nice rainbow cent from the 70s and a Canadian cent with King George on it. Again, something I had never seen. My coworker was just as fortunate.
It finally dawned on me that I had not seen any cents newer than 1982 and the light bulb went off. I had somehow come across someone's copper hoard.

The second fun thing happened today. Another teller was taking a customer deposit of new $100 bills. Once she made the deposit, she asked to sell them to the vault. I started to hand count them because one of our counters doesn't run them very well. I realized I was staring at a whole lot of star notes! Once I finished renumbering them, I realized I had all 100 from the strap! I plan to sell them on eBay, but I need to get them to increase my selling limit.
Sorry for the long winded post. I hope everyone is enjoying their piece of the hobby as I am.

Coin Collectors are a diverse group of people
Hello everyone. I haven't been on here in awhile. My wife and I are in the process of purchasing a house, so any extra money has been going toward the down payment. We go to closing on January 11, as long as everything stays on track.
I hope everyone has enjoyed their holiday season and has been surrounded by family and love. I received Ebay gift cards since I can't get anyone to shop for coins for me. ) I'm getting ready to go shopping, but I wanted to send greetings to everyone here first.
I wish everyone the best in their collecting pursuits in the coming year. May you finish sets and start new ones that will make your spouse upset with you! )

    I've created a monster!
As you all know, I have gotten one of my co-workers hooked on collecting. In a way,I have hurt myself.
I was in the vault room and he comes back with a "cat that ate the canary" grin on his face and tells me to guess what he just found. It turns out to be a 1928 $2 bill. Needless to say, I was quite jealous.
I got him back though. Our currency shipment came in a few hours later, full of bricks from the FED; aka fresh sequential bills.... I ended up going home with a nice $5 repeater. It's a nice game of oneupsmanship.
I also found a 1907 Indian Head Cent in some deposited change. The only thing I will regret about one day moving to corporate is losing my access to so much undearched money.
Have you found anything fun recently?

An observation, some additions and a rant.
An update on my coworker. I caught him picking through the quarters in his drawer during downtime. He is working on the album I got him. I think he's hooked. I told him to let me know when he found a Wisconsin Quarter and I explained the extra leaf varieties to him. I also told him about the Hawaii overprint notes.
We got paid early this pay period, so I got to place my coin orders early. I picked up a couple of PF commemorative coins, a few Jefferson nickels for my collection and one for my nephew's collection.
Now for my rant. I saw that my Presidential dollar set was no lknger 100% complete. Why in the world would the mint add reverse proofs to a collection that is coming up on its final year?! Other than to gouge the collector some more.... It almost makes me not want to complete the set.
    Happy collecting.

    Luring in a coworker
I think I have brought a coworker over to the Numismatic Side. (I feel like the Emperor from Star Wars. )
He is from Azerbaijan in eastern Europe and today he was looking at the quarters in his drawer and asked me why they all looked different. Two hours later (No lie) after having talked about the State Quarter program, Augustus St Gaudens, the 1933 Gold Double Eagle, all the mints past and present, (I'm really not kidding. ) he asked if it was expensive to start a collection. I think I'm going to stop by Barnes and Noble this weekend and get him a few coin folders.
In other news, I ordered two coins for my Washington Quarter 1932 - 1964 set. That is 30% complete and my PF Jefferson set is 66% complete. I can see a little light on that set. Not too shabby.
    Happy collecting, everyone.

    One Coin At A Time
I ordered a couple of commemorative halves and a Washington Quarter for my collection this week.
I think there is something psychological about looking at your collection here and seeing gaps in years close up as you add coins.
As I read magazines, I look at coins that are on the pie in the sky wish list and I wonder if I were to have the money to buy anything I wanted, when I wanted, would collecting be as much fun? What do you think? As much fun as it would be to win the lottery and be able to complete collections at will, would it be as much fun?
    Happy collecting,

    Hit or Miss?
I was at work yesterday breaking down a box of quarters. I always like to look at which coins are at the ends of the rolls, really identifying with the State Quarters, because the Florida quarter is what got me started in coin collecting.
As I looked at them, I realized how many of the ATB designs I didn't recognize and couldn't match to the state by the design. For me, that is really MY problem with the series. There is not a cohesive element to it. When it came out, I thought there was going to be a landscape element to it, but the designs are all over the place: Saratoga has a hand relinquishing a sword to another hand, there is a statue of a man, etc...
Working in a bank during both the State Quarter and ATB programs, I remember that so many people were coming in asking whether the next state had come out that I printed the mint's production schedule from their website to hand out to people. I can't recall a single person asking me about the ATB quarters.
For me, I really hope this is the end of circulating commemorative coinage. What are your thoughts?

    For a Brand New Nephew
I just found out that my first nephew was born about an hour ago, so I started a new set called Texan's Nephew's Type Set. I just purchased the first coin for it; a coin type that I think most people started out with: a Lincoln Cent. A 2015 PF69 Ultra Cameo to be exact.
I will get to meet him tomorrow.

My Commemorative Half Dollar set will soon be complete.
I received my last paycheck from my job today. (I start at a new place on Monday) This check included all of my unused vacation time, so I figured now was the time to pull the trigger on the last two coins I needed for this set: 1996 MS Olympic Swimming and 1996 PF Olympic Soccer.
These two coins have been a real thorn in my side, as I have always found them way over priced. I decided to break down and add PCGS graded coins to my search. (I just prefer the look of the NGC holders) I found them both at great prices and purchased them today.
This next week will be a tough waiting period for me, since I really want to see those two slots filled.
I hope you all enjoy your 4th of July weekend and eat your fill of BBQ!
