There will be tiny raised dots or similar shapes on the coin surface corresponding to where tiny pieces of metal have rusted away from the die striking the coin. This was common with early copper pieces probably due to the expense of using more and fresher dies for low denomination coins.

Thanks Kohaku. I have enjoyed reviewing your great collection but its time to concentrate on other things.

I really appreciate your comments RMK.
it was your journal that led me to write this.
it is my sincere hope that you will be able to beat your illness and continue to enjoy our hobby. But if it is not to be, you have acted as a steward to history for future generations to learn and enjoy in their own way. And that should give you some satisfaction.
Good luck to you.

Thanks Jaggy for your kind words.
There is a time to indulge your interests and passions. One of ours is our great hobby. I hope that future owners of many of these great pieces will enjoy them as much as I have.

Thanks Gary. As I said I didn’t think I would have to write this soon .
I love our hobby but as in all things there is a time to let them go.

Thanks for the compliment Kohaku!
i think that your award on your set is very well deserved.

I doubt that this piece circulated at all but sloshed around in an old time coin cabinet and developed a bit of cabinet friction at the shoulder and high point to the hair on the obverse . Reverse looks Mint or near so. The piece has some lustre going for it as well

Indeed a nice coin, and I truly appreciate the comments on being happy to "be in the game.
Happy New Year everyone!
Happy New Year to you, Kohaku and to all the readers of these journals!

Thanks gherrmann and to Welsh Dragon.
Happy New Year to you both!

Thanks. There may be better pieces out there ( this is stabbed as an MS 61) but it was picked up at a reasonable price.
i don’t think I will bid on the Anne Crown in MS 65 available in the Heritage auction as it is beyond my snack bracket, starting at $20k.

Keep on doing what you’re doing , Kohaku! Very educational.

Another part of a great , well defined and well researched collection.
Hopefully we are not entering a period with parallels to this part of Roman history.

Thank you !

Nice set you have there!

A very nice piece and better struck on the reverse than most of that date!
The Center of the reverse often comes incompletely Struck.
this coin is a survivor of the Great Recoinage of the mid and late 1690s, led by the Master of the Mint at the time, Sir Isaac Newton. This was his day job after dodging falling apples out of trees and figuring out the theory of gravity as a result.

Thanks for your kind words Kohaku.
i should be back in the saddle soon and hope to post more nice British pieces.
Am currently plotting and scheming auction strategy for the NYINC auctions.😉
Many fine pieces are available.

I like bright non toned pieces too but anything 300 years old would be dipped and might obscure things such as cleaning. So beware.
Any pics of your 1697?

There is a 1797 penny graded as a 65 coming up at Heritage in the New Year.
if anything, my piece shows much better than the picture as the picture doesn’t show the glossy lustre of the actual piece.
There are dozens of patterns and proofs produced by the Soho Mint in the 1788 to 1807 period as it sought to perfect its technology and to win a production contract from the British government.
if you don’t have the Standard on the subject of British copper and bronze coins by C Wilson Peck, written in the 50s and 60s, it comes highly recommended.
long out of print it is not cheap but worth it

What can I say?
A great collection together with great scholarship.
Kudos to Kohaku!

-
Thanks very much. A complete type set of Victoria pennies, per the Standard Catalog of British Coins, will be posted next.

Crickets chirping.

Thanks very much Bob.
Yes, this 1746 British Proof Halfcrown ( NGC PR 66 Star) is perhaps my favourite piece but will soon go with the others.
