Absolutely superb coins and medals and wonderful pics/presentation. Congrats on the upcoming birth. I got my granddaughter interested in numismatics with simple purchase and display of things she loved. She did a school report on Tanzania, so I bought her a Tanzania coin with a beautiful butterfly on it. We went to Disney, and I got her a Mickey Mouse coin-- I also got her a Spiderman coin since that's her favorite superhero.
She has always been an animal lover, so I started her a themed set of "bear coins". She has a shelf displaying the Spiderman, Mickey and Tanzania coin in her room. The bear collection is too large to display but we pull them out occasionally and she likes to go through them. Now she says that wolves are her favorite animal so I might have to get her a few of those too...
Again, congrats on great coins/grades, your new home ( being closer to family is a blessing) and your wife's new job also!

Sorry to hear of your loss - fortunately memories don't really disappear and nice reminders are everywhere.
Many congratulations on the little one and the job. My kids had a giant world map on the wall and I would buy bulk world coins lots and they would stick them on the map - bit difficult for countries that no longer exist This covered a bit of geography, a bit of history and all based on coins - they still pick dates and commemorative issues out of their change!

...kiddos into numismatics, no problem...having had 6 kiddos im a pro...they all started out liking shiny things, but as they entered their teen years their preference was for the kind u buy things with, this quickly escalated...(currency seemed to prevail over coins?)....now its mostly bars n ingots from the monarchy of Bullionia....easy peasy...

Thanks, Mike and Gary! We are both overjoyed about the baby. We have know for several months, but it still seems surreal. This is the first grandchild for both of our parents so they are just excited.

I'm glad to see you back and I am sorry for your loss. As for your grades, they are awesome. Even more awesome is the eye appeal of all your medals. They are all in excellent condition, and yours maybe the only collection of its kind. Congratulations on the little one on the way. My first grandson was born a year ago on July 4 and it's been a pure joy to see him grow in his first year. I just can't express how much I love that little guy! BTW excellent photographs! Gary

Yes there are! I have a typed letter signed by Laura Gardin Fraser concerning her sculpted abutments for the Roosevelt Bridge in Washington DC. Incidentally, these were never installed and are rumored to be stored in a government warehouse someplace. Gary

I'm also trying to mostly stay focused on core projects - which at the moment is mostly Zimbabwean coins and maybe some other stuff soon. But these are a small diversion with minimal cost versus "registry grade" collecting of high grade coins so I'm just having some nice fun with it with no pressure or expectations on it. It's nice.
They don't cost much and don't take up much room.

May I kindly request that you not share these? I am doing my best to stick to my core collections, and these coins are a direct threat to that mission!
All joking aside, I have long admired the designs of the early 20th century Italian coins. I've had many higher grade examples on my watchlist for the better part of a year now.

coinsandmedals reacted to coinsbygary in Yet another positive NGC experience!
I had a positive experience with a customer service representative proving and preserving a provenance attached to two of Laura Gardin Frasers medals in my collection. Reading an article in the June 2018 issue of "The Numismatist" I read the story of a family who had charge of numerous items from James Earle and Laura Gardin Fraser's studio. Among the items were medals, plasters, and sculptures. I also found from a phone conversation with the curator, whose parents were aides to the Fraser's, that the plasters of Laura's Washington Quarter design were borrowed by the US Mint for the 1999 Washington commemorative half-eagle. For his trouble the mint presented him with a proof example of the Washington Commemorative. But I digress. Soon after the the article was published, I was contacted by my "all things Fraser" mentor-friend that the curators only lived 60 miles from where he lived and that he made an appointment to inspect the studio collection. From his inspection he recommended that I purchase two medals from the Fraser studio collection. Acting as my agent, my mentor-friend negotiated a good price for me and it was a sale. When I sent the medals to NGC for grading, I asked that the provenance be preserved. I presented them with a hand written bill of sale, a canceled check, and the Numismatist article as evidence that the medals I now owned once belonged to the Frasers. Over the phone I talked with NGC's head of medal grading over the wording of the provenance and finally settled on "Fraser Studio Archives."

You are doing a lot for a PhD student, sometimes you just have to focus on things. Having organised a number of conferences I now decline politely
I am spending the weekend going through draft dissertations for some of my students - also with feline 'help'!

I taught a 65 student class for 1 semester. I never want to do it again. It is a lot of work unless you just shove most of it off onto the TAs, and even then. And it is infuriating to see students blow off a class on Industrial Hygiene and Process Safety.
