You could be correct. The 1963 might be an extremely low end PF66 while the 1961 an extremely high end PF66.

More than likely, the coin will have a trace of counting wheel damage. It's very common on mint set dimes and NGC often just calls it cleaning, to be done with it, when they detect the hairlines. Hope that helps.

Sorry, Dooly. Just another example of NGC's inability to explain to their customer a 4 or 5 word explanation for rejection. Takes too much time I guess and we might learn how to grade coins and put them out of business. I can just see that happening! rantrantra

Hi Dooly,

Given that I have lots of proof/mint sets from the modern era, what enhancements in value do you think you've gotten from your slabs? Did you pick thru hundreds of sets to find just the best coins, or did these come from a smaller private stash?

If I break out the coins from my sets and sell them raw, I'm sure they wouldn't bring much in most cases. Trying to figure out if slabbing at $12/coin (is that the right price?) adds big increments in value.

Hi there djm

all the pre 1971 coins were from one lot i won on eBay a bit back

Lot contence:-

1982 proof 1/2 washington $

1961 proof set

1962 proof set

1963 proof set

1964 proof set

1984 mint set

all for about £35 so about £1.10 per coin 0r $2

i tried to pick out the ones i thaught were the best from the sets to test my grading skills (there are still some very good ones to send but i also wanted to try some of the 1971's for my BY set)

hear is the breakdown of the results

1961 50c PF-66 $23.75

1963 50c PF-66 $25.00

1961 25c PF-65 $12.00

1963 25c PF-67 $25.00

1961 5c PF-66 $13.75

1963 5c PF-66 $13.75

1964 5c PF-68 $25.00

1963 1c PF-67 $16.25

Total of $154.40

take away $2 each for the cost of the raw coins - $16.00

= $138.40

Take away $12.50 per coin for the grading = $100.00

= $38.40

+ 43 coins left from the lot i won on ebay

so is there a proffit ? well possbley a little one BUT if one had hit a BIG grading number things would have been diferent.even if the ones which graded 66 had hit 67s they would have been in the $30-50 scale.. but this is not why i sent the coins off i am still learning and a slabed coin you have not had in the hand before it has been slabbed is so different ..
