Reference Grading Sets for TPGs

6 posts in this topic

I didn’t want to derail the other thread but what is a TPG’s reference grading set? Is it literally nearly all coins at all the various grades? It sounds extensive if that’s right.

I've always understood it to be a set of coins from certain series in each or most grades. However, I have not worked for a TPG and could be wrong.

I believe it was only for popular generic sets.

I have seen a Morgan and a Walker (partial?) set listed on the inserts as being part of the grading set.

I’m thinking I read somewhere a few years back that Rick Tomaska created a reference set of the Franklin Proof D CAM designations for a grading service. So it would make sense to me they have such sets for certain series.

I wouldn’t think the sky was falling in if they were sold.
