1854 liberty seated quarter scarring?

5 posts in this topic

Hey gang,

How about your opinions on how this 1854 LSQ was damaged. It's somewhat odd in the way the scarring? stops and restarts across the obverse. I'm sure it is post mint damage but is it something anyone has seen before? If you look close you will note that their are two sets of parallel scars, one obvious and one not so obvious through the hand above. Their is rim damage at 9 and 3 o'clock on the obverse also, probably occurred at the same time. Their is no damage to the reverse. Thanks

I've added the reverse image to compare color. scarredlibstdqtrrev.jpg

this is the only pic the seller offered. looks like someone tried to clean an area in the field to the right of liberty. One moment it looks like its NT and then AT. weird coin at the least.

It was obviously scrapped on something that was wider than the quarter was because whatever it was spanned the coin and never dropped down into the field area.
