It's a 1857 proof half cent in a PCGS PR63BN holder. The last Heritage sale of a proof half cent was in 2000. I've been watching it for awhile, but decided I wouldn't bid so thought I would bring it up here in case anyone is interested. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...p;rd=1&rd=1
Steve, in order to avoid a possible misunderstanding, I'd amend that to say " The last Heritage sale of an 1857 proof half cent was in 2000."

Actually the last Heritage sale of any proof half cent was August, 2000 - at least according to their archives. That was an 1860 ANACS PR60. The 1857 sold in February, 2000.

Edit: Sorry about the typo - they didn't make half cents in 1860. The correct date is 1850.

Steve, either something was wrong with your search or the website, itself. I have seen many Proof Braided Hair Half Cents offered by Heritage in the past year and here is a list from August 2006, on, that showed up in my search:

Personally, the coin looks off to me. Some environmental damage or perhaps a poorly done coating of oil AKA Hide-A-Problem.

That's strange. Maybe they quit updating the archives after 2000. When I search for your lot numbers I can see the sale, but it's not in the archives. If I search for "half cents" it shows sales up to May 1, 2007, if I search for "proof half cents" the last entry is August, 2000?

By the way, it's quite surprising that no 1857 examples have appeared in Heritage sales since 2000, as according to the NGC Census Report, that is easily THE most readily available Proof date in the series.

Steve, try a search under Proof Braided Hair Half Cents, and not just Proof Half Cents - the latter search that you used must be outdated.

OK, this is getting funny. If I search "proof braided hair half cents" it shows the last sale for an 1857 was January, 2007.
