Future Commemorative Coin Subjects

29 posts in this topic

If you could recommend five events or subjects of national importance to be commemorated on a gold or silver coin, what would they be? Only one coin per event/subject and only one commemorative (gold or silver) per year.

I liked the idea of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory proposal of having all 9 planets - space exploration - themes on the coins. Instead of all 9 coins in one year then how about one a year.

As an x-ray tech, I would have liked to have seen Wilhelm Roentgen and the 100th anniversary of the discovery of x-rays featured on a commemorative coin back in 1998.

Pearl Harbor is also a worthy them to be remembered.

And what about the 50th anniverary of Hawaii's statehood in 2009? That could have the potential to be a beautiful coin.

Bozeman, MT

The latest studies have revealed that the calderas that have erupted in Yosemite during the past 1,000,000 years are actually part of a chain of caldera eruptions that extend from Nevada toward the northeast. This has been due to the gradual shifting of the tectonic plates toward the southwest. Scientists now believe there may be another major eruption in store that could occur within 50 miles of Bozeman. If that happens, it will likely be wiped off the face of the map.

NEWS BULLETIN!! Washington, D.C., 2025 AD In an effort to curtail the ever-increasing damage to the earth's atmosphere and the threat of global warming, Congress has enacted laws that make the sale or resale of gasoline-powered vehicles illegal. Furthermore, a 3000% surcharge will be applied to the sale of gasoline products for all non-transportation equipment.

Relocation of the Statue of Liberty to the South Pole

No more illegal aliens, PLEASE!

Social Security Act of 2010

A referendum vote attached to the 2008 Presidential Election has passed by a landslide. It mandates that all Congressional and Senatorial representatives must participate and pay into the Social Security retirement system, and the benefits they receive from Social Security can be no better than those received by the average schmo.

This is all I could think of at the moment.

9/11 is something that deserves commemoration.

Theodore Roosevelt is long overdue for commemoration for his contribution to coinage design in the United States.

I agree with the 9/11 note. DEFINITELY needs a commemorative coin.

I don't know if the nation is ready for one, however. It might light their emotional fire all over again.

I like the Teddy Roosevelt idea (maybe combine it with a Panama Canal type idea) I also like a NASA/Apollo program/Space shuttle commemorative (especially since they are about the retire the shuttle).

What about the Moon Landing ? Has there been one for that?

You mean the one that was filmed in the Arizona or Nevada desert?

How about a commemorative for each of the mints that have been part of the history of coins themselves. San Francisco, Philadelphia, Denver, New Orleans, Charlotte, Carson City, Dahlonega.

The 100th year of the NAACP will be in 2010. It will also be the 50th Anniversary of Eisenhower signing the Civil Rights Act of 1960 into law. With this, maybe there could be a civil rights commemorative themed program.

2010 will be the 75th Anniversary of the Social Security Act. This commemorative can be issued with the proceeds being deposited in a "lockbox" for the Social Security Trust Fund. 893whatthe.gif

The game Monopoly will be 75 in 2010.

2011 will be the 50th Anniversary of the Peace Corps and the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War. How about that for a juxtaposition of ideals!

For 2012, it will be the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 and the writing of a poem by Francis Scott Key entitled "Defence of Fort McHenry" after seeing the flag still flying over Fort McHenry in the Baltimore Harbor. The poem was later set to the tune of a Scottish drinking song and renamed "The Star Spangled Banner."

Edited to add: WOW! This is my 1000th post on these board! Cool!!! headbang.gif

The BRM has a 2007 Bicentennial for the end of the slave trade:

UKASTGP_3.JPG

Slave importation was stopped in the US in 1808 which could make for a bicentennial of historical significance. 1808 was also the first year the US Constitution allowed for an amendment to restrict slavery.

This could go along with the other Civil Rights coins being planned and suggested.

ScottB and Zoins have presented a well-thought out, complimentary list of issues that appear to be quite worthy of inclusion. However, I think the commemoration of Monopoly would lead to an abundance of easy jokes about the state of our coinage and currency. I would add TR and the Panama Canal to the list and might even add Clinton's Folly, also known as Clinton's Ditch. Please note the emphasis on the D of Ditch and that these terms refer to former NYS governor DeWitt Clinton and the Erie Canal.

I think that these responses are a good indication that there have been too many commemorative coins recently, jusy as there were in the traditional series which led to the end of those isses.

I think that commems. of sucessful planetary explorer satelites would be interesting (i.e. the Voyager series, etc.). Some of these will be having 25th, 50th, whatever anniversaries.

Ok here is my pitch:

A Commemorative to Coca-Cola. Or better yet one of the Coin-operated Vending Machine

A few links to the history of vending machines:

Horn & Hardart is a company that came to prominence as the proprietors of the first automat in New York City.

Joseph Horn and Frank Hardart had already opened an automat in Philadelphia, but their "Automat" at Broadway and 13th Street, in New York City, a cafeteria with its prepared foods behind small glass windows and coin-operated slots, created a sensation when it opened on July 7, 1912.

The automats were particularly popular during the Depression era, and their Macaroni and Cheese, Baked Beans, and Creamed Spinach were staple offerings.

The company also popularized the notion of "take-out" food, with their slogan "Less work for Mother".

Introduced in 1958 and entering service in 1961, the Phantom was the back bone of the US Military for many years. 2008 will see it's 50th anniversary...I cut my teeth on this "War Horse"

F-4.gif

F-4 C single seat, 2 external fuel tanks, 4 Sparrow missles, 6-250 lb bombs on centerline MER (multiple ejector rack) 6-250 lb bombs, 3 ea. on wing station TER's (triple ejector racks) taking off with full after burner on a mission in Nam.

The F-4G "Advanced Wild Weasel," was the last model still in the active Air Force inventory during Operation Desert Storm against enemy surface-to-air missile batteries.

A combination Navy/Air Force/Marine pilot on heads, F-4 Phantom on tails...this could lead to a whole series of commemorative areonauticle military coins.

I think this could be interesting because I like military hardware but, depending on how large the set is, I'm guessing a number of people might complain about another large commemorative set after the SHQs, Presidents and Spouses. Still, I'd probably pick up a few here and there.

For what this set might look like, check out the Hutt River Desert Storm series.

The 50th for Sputnik is Oct 7 of this year.

Let the Russians commemorate that event.

Our Response to the USSR

So what did the US do, take a look.

The night time viewing times for ECHO were listed in the Sunday edition of the Milwaukee Journal, so we'd select the appropriate time, stand outside while the mosquitos ate you alive to watch a brighter than bright star move across the heavens...pretty amazing times.

Thanks for posting. I didn't know about the Echo satellites and that the Semicentennial is coming up. That is pretty cool how people would get together and watch scientific progress in action. Today we can watch the Mars explorers on the Internet but somehow the experience has changed.

I'm not sure what possessed me to look this up, but 2008 is the vicennial (20 year anniversary) of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act which allows for and regulates Indian casinos. I'm not sure if this can be considered related to Civil Rights but it's done a lot for the Indians.
