It's a struck through grease/"filled die" error. Basically, in the die, the one U got partially filled with "grease"/"grime"/"gunk" when this coin was struck.

EarlyUS? It's just Early U.S., except with punctuation (and spaces) removed in order to make it a legal URL. Wish there was a more clever explanation!
