2001 proof Sacagawea values

7 posts in this topic

Like my confusion over the lack of solid mintage figures for the 1998 S "matte proof" Kennedys, I have never found any good reason for the 2001 Sacagawea Dollar to be so much higher than the rest of the series. Mintage figures north of 3 million wouldn't seem to support the cost. Any theories?

I don't know Ken. I don't collect Sacagawea Dollars. Maybe it is the ones where the experimental rinse was used that are so pricey.

I was looking at the NGC pop report. According to it only 488 graded PFUC70. This was the lowest amount of PFUC70 in the Sacagawea coins. The next lowest was the 2002. 838 of the 2002s have been graded PFUC70. Maybe this has a little to do with the price.

It looks to me that there may be a couple reasons. First of all, 2001 was the last year for circulation of these. The after-years have only been available thru collectors sets (mint sets, etc.). The mintages were as follows:

2000P = 767,140,000

2000D = 518,916,000

Total = 1,286,056,000

2000S (mintage numbers of Silver proof and Proof sets = 4,047,904

2001P = 44,968,000

2001D = 70,939,500

Total = 115,907,500

2001S (mintage numbers of Silver proof and Proof sets = 2,080,262

I would say that this is a considerable decline in mintage from 2000. This is from the US Mint's 2001 annual report.

I saw your Kidney Cancer Association logo--I'm stage IV renal cell carcinoma, primary tumor site mediastinum directly on top of heart. Metasticized following removal of left kidney in '98. I finish one year on Sutent next week--new drug working a miracle. Back to topic--

My figures are from the Red Book, so may not be authoritative. I show, crosschecked with proof set totals and proof dollar figures:

2000 - 4,047,993 proofs

2001 - 3,184,606 proofs

2002 - 3,211,995 proofs

2003 - 3,298,439 proofs

There shouldn't be much of a tie between circulating mintages and proofs, should there?

Still a mystery to me. I got one in an online auction from a very large, well respected firm certified NGC PR68 for a grand total of $18.48 not long ago. Must have slipped through due to volume of business or some other oversight.

Circulated are always going to be considerably higer than proofs. There will be an even more decline in these now due to the Prez dollars. I would be watching for these values to change in the coming years. Proofs and uncirculated could see an increase in value. IMHO

BTW- My wife is stage IV also. She was diagnosed and had her right kidney removed 2 years ago. She has been on sutent for a year and one month now.
