Question about the Jefferson 1994-P and its varieties???

5 posts in this topic

What is the difference between a

1994-P PCGS MS69FS SMS

and the one in the Jefferson Proof Set called a Specimen???

I've never seen on anywhere that actually said ""Specimen" on it...

They were made basically the same way but the terminology did not exist for the 1994 and 1997 finishes. The '90's coins have been called satin proof, satin finish, etc. because there was no consensus on what to call them. So, it appears that PCGS called them "specimen" strikes.

This was from another forum that jgrinz had the answer for. I quote him:

It is the MATTE proof Coins released in the Special Coin and Currency sets.

I believe one was the Botanic Gardens Set and the Other the Jefferson Coin & Currency Set ..

PCGS uses the Term SMS ( Special Mint Set ) meaning that the coins came from the Jefferson Commemorative Set and the Botanic Gardens Set.

NGC actually uses a SPECIMEN designation as in "SP70"
