PCGS TrueView: always in holder or not?

8 posts in this topic

Are all PCGS TrueViews done when the coin is in plastic? I assume the ones where you just request the photo service on an already encapsulated coin are. If you request grading on a raw coin or a reholder service with TrueView, are the photos taken before or after the coin is put into the new holder?

They are all done raw. If you send a coin in for the service and the coin is already in a PCGS slab they will break the coin out of the slab and then charge you an additional fee for the reholder service. This is one reason why you generally cannot ask for the TrueView service in conjunction with a crossover candidate since failed crossover attempts will not be raw coins.

It really gives them a leg up when photoing without the plastic.

Exactly! All those angles for lighting a coin in a slab where glare kills the potential for a great image are suddenly gone. Also, PCGS will allow the owner of the coin a certain amount of lattitude as to how the final image should appear in terms of color saturation, brightness and appearance of luster.

It is my understanding that they are still doing them, but are not publicizing that fact. One would have to request the service beforehand even though there may not be anything on the submission form relating to it.
